BeerSaturday: Don't Pay the Ferryman

avatar

Back with the 'Beer Saturday' antics… which actually took place on Sunday. So where did we go, and more importantly what beverages were drunk?!

After a walk along the river, we ended up at a country pub (Double Locks) where a couple of pints of their finest ale was the order of the day…

I went with a Ferryman to start with which was a nice drop from Exeter Brewery, and seeing as we were in that neck of the woods it was rather fitting. That slipped down nicely, so we went for one of the others on offer.

This time venturing slightly further afield with a London Special. This was a bit stronger at 4.5% (the Ferryman was 4.2%), from Young’s brewery… and was a rich and hoppy number which also went down well.

We wanted to go to another pub on our way back that we hadn’t been to for a while. The Hour Glass is a classic style pub which was in danger of being sold, but the community there clubbed together to keep it going as is. Good for them, and it’s retained its old charm. Often these community efforts don’t work for one reason or another but they seem to be going just fine.

I had a rather aptly named (well, not yet but could happen) Fall’s Over, (which could apply to the season rather than a stumbling punter?) and my Dad who was also there went for a porter by the name of Darkness. I’m not a huge fan of porters, although I will have one occasionally but he seems to like them. Not actually falling over but once again the beer was spot on for me.

Then we headed for the bus, cutting it a bit fine of course… and yep, it was bang on time… and we weren’t! So a missed bus and an hour to kill. What to do? Only one answer in this predicament, and we went and visited an old occasional haunt called the Pig & Pickle which is a micropub, sells an interesting selection of beers and a good place to while away some time and chat some more.

I had a Beam Me Up which is an Aussie pale ale (not pictured, it was just to the right but those are some of the others on offer), and although tasty and more ‘crafty’, it’s starting to get to that point of being a bit too much. Not in the alcohol sense so much, but I only tend to have 2 or 3 of these style beers (pints of course, being in the UK ;)) or it starts to get a bit sickly.

Fortunately the bus stop was just across the road with this one and we didn’t leave it to chance and were several minutes early. Although this one was a little late would you believe, but that’s the way it goes. Either way, those of us on the bus got back, and my sister trotted off to her place too.

All in all, a pleasant day out. Got caught out by the weather as well a bit… sun and no rain forecast but of course that wasn’t quite accurate. On the plus side, we did manage to dodge the showers and it didn’t affect the day too much in the end.

Cheers all! 🍻

Eventful day out with your Dad and Sister, always enjoy the names of the pubs serving pints to taunt and delight!

So many of the charming old places having to be protected by the locals, good to read you have so many still open thanks to community support.

Yes, all fun and games! A nice stroll was the main thing, then a few beers in the mix.

There are some great pubs out there (and great names), hopefully we can keep them going well into the future!
