Tales from an uncertified MUA (LOH #231)

(Edited)

Just a pretty face, good lighting, a good phone camera, lined eyes and brown powder.

Disclaimer!!! This writer is not a professional makeup artist — no MUA certificate, just vibes and a beauty blender.

I was pretty excited to jump on this week’s prompt when I read it last night—until it was time to put my thoughts into written words. I guess that’s kinda the hard part. It’s easy to know what to write in your head, but actually penning it down? Naaahhh 😂😂😂

Do you like makeup? How does it make you feel? Tell us about your makeup routine. Are you an expert? Do you use a lot of products? Or do you prefer something simpler?
Show us photos of yourself with simple makeup or more complex makeup.

Try on some foundation… 😏

Answering the first question on the prompt— of course! Who wouldn’t love makeup!? Even the guys wear it seldomly 😂

As a young female child in primary school, my mum’s makeup tools—black eyeliner, white powder, and lipgloss—somehow always found their way onto my face! Don’t ask me how they got there ☺️ Truly, I didn’t sneak into my mum’s room whenever she wasn’t looking to apply then on my face… or did I? 😏 Oh, the way my face transformed made me feel on top of the world. Plus, my peers didn’t dare use makeup at that age, so I was kinda the ‘big girl’ in their midst 😂 I’d tell them what each product was and how to use it. It didn’t matter if I was right, as long as they believed me, I was a queen!!!

All was going well, until….. My elder sister told me I was applying liquid eyeshadow on my lips 🤦🏽‍♀️ Really embarrassing! Took her years to find out. What if my peers knew all my ‘expert’ makeup tips were just talks 😩 Well, a queen is a queen. I prioritized learning everything about makeup, whether I use of it or not. I was now a teenager in senior school, and with the advantage of having access to a phone—that year, opera mini would have been tired of me. 😂

Well, I’m an adult now, chasing the bags and there’s hardly ever time to pick up those brushes. Worse still, I can’t keep up with the ever-evolving makeup trends. One minute, a makeup pro is using product A first for her routine, and ending the routine with product B. The next minute, another pro is saying “nope, that’s all wrong. 😂 Girl, you’re getting me confused! Thankfully, I know most of the products used in makeup, their uses and applications, even though I don’t fancy doing them, thanks to social media.

It got tiring trying to make makeup artists understand that I really don’t fancy red lipstick on my lips. Then, there’s the issue of brows,—some artists make them too bold or big, while others give me ‘60s brows.

And let’s not forget the struggles— collars and necklines getting stained, being extra cautious when hugging people, cracks if you use the wrong product, and God help you if you’ve got a runny nose with a full face makeup, and so much more. 😂 Honestly,, I’ll stick to SFX makeup… I don’t think the rules are as burdensome as beauty makeup, plus, it gives room to explore one’s creativity.

Now, I’m back to the things I used as a child— eyeliner, lipgloss and brown powder (yeah, the white powder had to go 😂) Just that this time, I don’t have to sneak around. If I want my face to pop a little, I add foundation to the mix. As simple as this is, I do feel great! I guess I never truly fancied makeup itself—the main feeling was having my peers envy me.

I’ve fallen in love with my natural face.

Thank you for reading. I know I talk a lot 😂😂😂😂
(To think I started writing this since morning 😅 I’m glad I’m done)

Wow, you've liked makeup since you were a child. It's an art to know and understand the facial features and be able to do makeup that beautifies each person's characteristics even more 😊

Hi my friend, haha, the liquid lip shadow thing made me laugh. When we're young, it's hard to understand so many things about makeup. I've even made mistakes with a few makeup products at some point, haha. I'm also more of a simpler, more natural makeup person. By the way, you have a beautiful face. Thanks for participating. Hugs.

You took me through a hilarious journey and fun moments of your life. The part when you were actually applying liqud eye shadow on your lip really made me burst into laughter 🤣🤣.
Another funny part was your peers seeing you as a queen and not knowing you are doing it wrongly in secret.😂
Yet another funny moment was how you described people with heavy makeups, the rules: limited hugging, worse when having running nose, and all the excesses...😂🤣
I really love your story, it really is captivating, I never wanted it to end. I was just laughing all through. I am a happy and fun person, this story made my day.

I admire your natural face by the way. You are beautiful.

Hilarious and an amazing write up, darling friend @aircomm. Well done
