Got some food photos? Care to share?
I always love to come home for being with family is so precious. We had time for a bonding in a simplest things like cooking together a delicacy like suman, biko and everything that we can think of.
That day, our Tatay brought a bunch of banana. It was harvested near the creak. It was my brothers banana that was planted one a half year ago. It is amazing to think that what he planted got some fruits now that we enjoy. Its a saba banana great to cook ripe for a banana que, turon or minatamis. But that day, we didn't wait for it to become yellow.
We cooked it fresh from harvest, still green because that day we were going to use the mortar and pestle that is made of hard wood. A newly made one,we call it, 'Alho and Lusong'. That hard wood was heavy, Tatay carved the center part of the log. This is our traditional miller for grinding rice and also use smashing foods like the unripe banana. Nilusak, very easy to prepare. Had to boil the banana with the right amount of water in a pot. After that, peel off the cooked banana skin. Then put the right pieces enough that it can fill up the Lusong, you can use the Alho to smash it. Pretty easy, just like smashing potatoes. We put brown sugar to sweetened it depending on your taste. One of the important ingredient is the grated coconut. There you have it. Nilusak na Saba is ready to share with kids and neighbors.
Clips for keeps:
The food is simple yet the bonding together making it was the best moments that I am looking forward when I got the time to be home which is not happening every day. It was that moment when we be able to connect with people in our lives we missed to be with all the time.
Foods we bring in the table makes people come together. Its a best time to catch up and be present with them.
I hope you had a great time.
By for now. ☺️

Wow. That’s a lot of banana. We love steamed saba, then dip it on star margarine or sugar. Perfect for a cup of coffee. But also, we agree about what you mentioned that this banana is also perfect for Turon and Banana Cue. Great snacks! 🍌
Right, we forgot the margarine. 😊 Thank you.

Nice to add a video to this one, whoever was doing the smashing is getting the muscles. Boiled green bananas aren't common here in Cambodia, but I've made them on a few occasions for my family, and they sort of like them. I think they are very similar to potatoes, but it can be a bit messy because the latex can make pots and pans sticky.
Haha, not seen in video but my nephew got his workout, smashing. We laughed hard asking him not to ever mess up the food with sweats. Saba banana is kind of made for this. It doesn't stick to much to the wood.
