Ohh I love how your friend has learned to the use his ego positively to his advantage. Clearly only the bold and courageous reach the highest peak of the mountain. I'm glad even in your own skin you are not doing badly. Really we can't all be the same, the trick is to find what works and never stop putting in effort to do it.
