The Experiment /Reblog Lottery

Welcome!
4 days ago I shared a post about getting a new 3d printer you can check out the link here

What makes it different than my other printers is that it has 2 independent extruders allowing to print with 2 different spools. Well what that allows you to do is to use 2 different color in one print or use 2 different materials.

The reason printing with 2 different materials is specials is because it opens up many new possibilities, so materials can be combined in one print, there is all sort of materials for 3d printers, there is all sort of plastics there is also rubber type material and even conductive materials, lets take the later if we combine conductive material with regular plastic we can imbed this conductive filament inside the plastic negating the use for wires.

Another pretty neat thing is support materials, so with 3d printing it's impossible to get good results printing mid air so supports are needed that later brake off they are a must for some prints and sometimes they can be very hard to remove and you can even break smaller and thinner parts in the process.

There are some special materials that can be used to make support, after the print is finished the part is put into water and after sometime the support material dissolves leaving behind a nice part without the struggle.

The only issue is that this support material called PVA is pretty expensive, I actually got some delivered today due to the underwhelming performance of my experiment.

The Experiment

as you can see in the pic above I managed to get the printer doing 2 colors, it's not the best but it's reasonable as you can may guess the red filament is supposed to dissolve so even though it looks rough it's should matter much the part that is supposed to stay behind is the blue color.

Hold on bitcoinman you said PVA dissolves in water what is with the alcohol, is that part of the experiment ? Sort of you see the red material is not PVA it's PVB a different material that is not water soluble but it is soluble in alcohol It's not really designed as a support material I am just seeing if it could be.

Unfortunately it's not looking very promising or at best the process is going to take very long.

This PVB material is about 4 times cheaper than PVA but I guess it may not be the best for this support role, that's alright PVB is still very useful, for one it's fairly easy to smooth a print out misting it with alcohol, the alcohol also makes it very sticky until the alcohol evaporates that can be useful for putting print together, also apparently it's a great material for lost wax casting leaving a clean burn out unlike other 3d printed plastics so it should come in handy in my casting adventures

@bitcoinman's bits of wisdom

  • Invest only what you can afford to lose and be mindful of the potential risks.
  • Unless you can accept delivery stay away from futures and stick to physical.
  • Leverage is a great tool for losing money fast.
  • Numismatics for the lows stick to smart stacking baby.
  • Be cautious of new schemes in crypto, like ICOs, DeFi, and NFTs, do your research before investing.

Very cool!

So PVB can be used for casting silver? Is that the plan?

Yep so there are 2 reason it's great for casting, for one it can be easily vapour smoothed with alcohol mist so you can get a really clean finish without the usual layer lines that come with 3d printing also it's apparently great for loas wax casting thats when you make a plaster mold around a wax model usual and then use a furnace to burn out the wax leaving behind the plaster mold for a single casting and PVB has a clean burn out unlike conventional plastic that are more likely to leave behind residue that will influence the quality of the mold/casting !BBH !hiqvote !PIMP
