A Failed Experiment : PVB as 3d Printing Support /Reblog Lottery

20240606_154225.jpg

Welcome in this post I share an update about my experiment that I shared on my blog 17 days ago link here as you can see from the title and the picture above it didn't really work out and that's ok that's how experiments work they don't always work 🤣

So a bit of a background, This experiment was to see if PVB (a type of 3d printer filament) can be used as a dissolvable support structure.

Support structures are like scaffolding that is needed to print parts with steep angles, they are after supposed to be removed however sometimes that is not that hard but also sometimes it can be next to impossible for certain geometries.

The support is usually printed out of the same material as the print and so there is not much that can be done about it however some machines can do more than one material at a time and with that you can use another material as supports.

The best is a material called PVA it dissolves in water making support removal easy work however it's a bit expensive, and so I tried to use PVB as an alternative it's a lot cheaper however instead of dissolving in water it dissolves in alcohol and as I came to find out in my experiment that process is not as effective.

The picture below is the results after 17 days

Some of the PVB did dissolve and we can see the PVB/alcohol slurry in the bottom of my DIY container, the plan was to examine and wash it out and replace the alcohol, however when I dumped the liquid bits out I noticed the no PVB material (blue PLA material) was also a bit flimsy I squished it and some of it cracked it appears the PLA was also effected by sitting in the alcohol bath, so I just trashed it, So the experiment didn't really work out but I did learn somethings, I still think that PVB can be used as a support material however in my experiment it was fully solid,
I think there could be better success with this method if the PVB support structure is printed more flimsy so there is less to dissolve.

I also ordered some PVA and will give it a try but like I said it's about 3.5x the price of PVB , the PVB is also still useful it can be smoothed out by alcohol and also it has a clean burnout for lost wax casting that I am trying to get into.

@bitcoinman's bits of wisdom

  • Invest only what you can afford to lose and be mindful of the potential risks.
  • Unless you can accept delivery stay away from futures and stick to physical.
  • Leverage is a great tool for losing money fast.
  • Numismatics for the lows stick to smart stacking baby.
  • Be cautious of new schemes in crypto, like ICOs, DeFi, and NFTs, do your research before investing.
