Only One Simple Step to Find Attendees for Your Next Buzz Party!

Authored by @tibfox

TL;DR: Here are the very short instructionsOkay you want the short and simple instructions?

Here you go:

  1. Join our Discord server and jump into the channel global chat - tools

  2. Use the slash command /hivers and instructions of the command

  3. Always make sure that the search results reflect the geographic area you want to search in. Since we have to use a wildcard search for cities there can appear false positive search results

Remember that the search relies on the fact that Hivers have to actually enter their geographic location into the location field of their Hive bio. Feel free to forward people this information so we will have a more complete list someday in the future.

Finding Attendees is not Easy

The Web3 Berlin Meetup was a blast!

You may have experienced the joy of meeting fellow Hive members in person. However, organizing such gatherings can be quite time-consuming. It involves finding and booking a suitable venue, researching interested participants, and effective communication. In this article, we'll introduce you to a helpful tool that simplifies one of these tasks with the power of Discord.

Getting the word out about an event usually involves extensive marketing, accidental discovery, manual searching, recommendations, or reaching people who already follow you. Usually, you might not have a list of Hive members nearby. But now, there's a solution to make this possible!

To make event planning easier, we've created a Discord bot command. This command works in three simple steps (you only need to enter it once):

  1. Gather a list of city names using a given location and a few search parameters.
  2. Search for Hivers with one of the city names in their bio.
  3. Provide a list of Hivers along with:
    • Hive profile link
    • Reputation
    • Location

Step by Step

Allow us to demonstrate just how simple it can be to find Hivers based on a given location and a handful more parameters.

1. Join our Discord server

Enter our discord and hop into the channel global chat - tools

2. Use the slash command /hivers
You have the option to use parameters and refine your search. We'll discuss these in a moment.

Sidenote: The bot should always give you feedback if something went wrong or you have selected a range that is too big and such. So feel free to try it out right now along with this article.

2.1 Start a first search
Now let's assume that we want to find Hivers in and around Hannover, Germany:

2.2 Simply hit [enter]
After you have sent your query the bot will take care of the rest.

After some time (it depends strongly on your search parameters), the bot will respond with a list of Hivers that match your search criteria:

2.3 Uhh, that's not a very satisfying list
No worries, we can improve the list by changing the default values at the bottom of the response message. For instance, we can broaden the search area beyond 50 km. This setting represents the beeline distance from the center of the starting location:

Absolutely, the new list looks promising with potential attendees. However, it's essential to use the parameters wisely. As seen above, there's someone from Grand-Est, Munster, which doesn't sound German. It's crucial to be mindful of such instances and ensure the search results are accurate and relevant.

2.4 Always remember to check the results
Just go through the Hive profiles (simply click on their name in the results) to ensure they genuinely reside in the search area. This step ensures the accuracy of potential attendees for your event and saves troubles in case you ping someone who is clearly not from your area ;)

3. Other parameters
There are a handful of other parameters with which you can refine your search even more.

  • activity_months

If you're not concerned about the recent activity of Hivers on the blockchain, such as writing posts or comments, you can adjust this parameter. By increasing the activity_months to, for instance, 1 year, you'll search for Hivers who have posted their last post/comment within the past 12 months instead of the default 3 months.

Please note that we don't support searching in the entire history, as it doesn't align with the intended use case. The goal is to find people interested in meeting others in real life. Inactive users might not be open to that or may not even notice any notifications on the blockchain. So, adjusting the search parameter can help you find more suitable potential attendees for your event but can also result in too many inactive users in the results.

  • min_population

As you now know, the search initially gathers a list of cities around your chosen search city. To enhance the search's performance (since Hivers are likely to include the nearest big city in their bio), we've set the default minimum population of cities to 10,000. However, you have the flexibility to adjust this setting as you see fit – either decrease or increase it based on your preferences.

  • country_code

City names are not always unique worldwide. For instance, there are multiple cities in the US with names similar to European cities. If you search for such a city, the bot will prompt you to specify the starting country with a parameter. This ensures accurate and relevant search results for your event planning.

4. Now, it's time to announce your Meetup/Event/Party

... and notify the users you found along the way. You can ping them so they receive a notification or comment underneath one of their most recent posts. That's up to you!

But: Don't forget to share your meetup details and let us know how it went! We'd love to hear all about your fantastic event!

Issues with this Method

There are 4 issues with this method of searching for Hivers:

  • Accuracy: The search might not always find accurate results, as it relies on city names mentioned in users' bios. Some users may not have updated their location or may use different variations of city names, leading to potential mismatches.

  • Similar-Sounding Cities: Many cities worldwide have similar names, which can lead to confusion and inaccurate results.

  • Non-Unique City Names: Some city names are not unique, making it challenging to distinguish between different locations with the same name.

  • Limited Information: The search results only provide basic information like the Hive profile link, reputation, and location. It may not give a comprehensive overview of the potential attendees, making it challenging to assess their interests or compatibility with the event.

But let's keep it real!

Despite the limitations, this method can greatly benefit hosts and save their valuable time. So, go ahead and use it!You can then focus on location scouting and planning talking points for the event with the time you have saved or simply enjoy your free time 🚀

Global Map Post of Buzz Party

Get Your Party Featured

It is as simple as posting your Hive party-related content into our community (cross-posts are valid as well of course). If your post is announcing an upcoming event we are going to add it to our database together with structured data like start/end date, address, and such. This database is used to update a one-stop global post with hyperlinks to continent-specific posts that contain all the data you need to find your meetups including map images and gmaps links.

You are not the original author of the announcement? No problemo! In this case, you can cross-post the announcement into our community or tag @buzzparty in a comment below. This simple action will help us connect with the party host and gather more attendees for their event. Your support plays a crucial role in making the party a success!

Next Steps of this Initiative

✔️0. Logo and Banner for the Community
✔️1. Execution of the needed Bot Changes
✔️2. Release of the One and Only Map Post

  1. We Will Need YOU

We need help from the community for inputting data and engaging with the community because we are (currently) incapable of understanding all the languages in the community. We are an international community and we do not plan to force our members to write in a specific language. The language of our posts will be English.

📈 4. Dedicated Posts about Each Bot Feature

Because the bot is not only meant to serve data input of our admins. There are some handy research features for party hosts and attendees as well in it. So many things that one single post would data overload the reader.

  1. Contests and More

We must gain more exposure to have a more complete list of parties. But we also aim to highlight the importance of offline meetups and events to build strong real-life relations. Getting to know people off-chain is an amazing feeling; we want to transport this across Hive.

  1. News related to Buzz Party

Of course we are going to update you about everything related to this project and all the upcoming things we add to it. There are nice little goodies as incentives for hosts in the pipeline and more. So make sure to give us a follow!

  1. Build up our HP

To support the party hosts and their announcements we are going to power up most of the post rewards. @hiveup-europe already withdraws his power to @buzzparty and I am going to delegate some of mine to the account. We will ask for your future delegations so you can be part of this "upvote incentive" for party hosts.

We are going to update you about the progress from time to time. If you are excited about Hive parties all across the world then make sure to give us a follow and subscribe to the community. Also, you can get in touch with us via our discord server or telegram group!

Let's meet someday at a Buzz Party in your area!
