Church of the Shells

On a small island in Galicia called La Toja there is a small white church popularly known as the chapel of the shells, its real name being Chapel of Caralampio.

My entry to Qurator´s Photo Quest: Church

The peculiarity of this small church is that it is completely covered with scallop shells.

This highly water-resistant material is abundant in the area, as the island of La Toja is in the heart of the Arousa estuary, a shellfish farming area where the cultivation of bivalves is one of the economic engines of the area.

Inside the church, we can see that the theme of shells is something very deep-rooted, as on the altar we can see the image of a virgin decorated with a shell on her back.

Without a doubt, every time I visit the area, I like to walk around the church. Especially in spring, when the nearby bushes are in bloom and decorate the church in a special way.

Regards.

What a lovely chapel. I'd be happy to have such a beautiful wall made of shells.

Small church where design runs deep with region, never seen or heard of a church using natural element in such a way. Respect shown by the people to the sea that feeds them.
