Keeping Your Child Safe While They Cycle ~ Things You Need to Know

So guys, I bet you know that there is nothing as exciting as seeing your child's face light up with joy every time they move around on their bikes right? That's a perfect picture of freedom, exploration, and fun in its purest form. But as parents, you would agree with me that, that joy you see lighting up on the face of your child can sometimes be mixed with a little worry right? Have you ever wondered how you can keep these little cyclists safe on the roads?

I have decided to come up with this guide that's packed with tips on how to promote safe bicycle practices that will keep your child riding with confidence and I assure you that this will definitely keep your mind at ease. I hope my tips will in one way or the other be useful for you guys.

Safety First: Gear Up for the Ride

First thing first; parents should make sure that before their child climbs their bicycle, they are to be properly equipped. What I mean by this is that your child must wear a well fitting helmet which should sit comfortably on their head, and not an helmet that wobbles around their head. Parents are to also make sure that the straps on their helmet should be buckled securely. I want you guys to think of the helmet as your child's superhero cape, a cape that's protecting their most important asset.

Next up, it's important that your child rides a bike that is just the right size. What I mean is that they need a bike that would make it possible for their feet to touch the ground comfortably when seated. I feel that this gives them control and confidence while riding. Don't also forget to check the bike. You should make sure that the brakes are working properly, the tires are inflated, and the chain is running smoothly.

Setting the Stage: Choosing the Right Path

Now, let's talk about where they ride. It's important you look for areas with low traffic and plenty of space for them to do their thing. I want us to know today that the sidewalks are always a good starting point. Once you see that your children are now more comfortable, you can easily but gradually introduce them to streets that are kind of quiet or even designated lanes that are meant for bike. Mind you, you should be doing all these under close supervision.

Teaching the Rules of the Road.

So, just like cars, bikes are not excluded from rules since they also need to follow some basic rules. You are to meant to teach your child the importance of looking left and right before crossing. You are to teach them that they are to stop whenever they see a stop signs, and when they are expected to continue moving. Practice they say, makes perfection, so as a parent, all you just have to do is to keep taking your children on short rides and try as much as possible to continue walking them through these steps without being tired until it becomes a part of them.

Lead by Example: Be a Role Model

I guess we all know that children learn best by watching right? So you are to make sure your child sees you modelling safe cycling practices as a parent. What I mean by this is that your children should always see you wearing a helmet every time you take a bike ride with your them. You shouldn't for any reason forget to also obey the traffic rules, and try as much as possible to show them how to share the road with others respectfully.

Conclusion

So guys, I believe that if you are able to follow these simple tips, you will be able to equip your child with the knowledge and skills they need to be a confident cyclists that rides safely. Don't forget that this is a journey and so, there will be unsteady moments and occasionally, your child might end up having a scraped knees. But don't worry about these things because with patience, encouragement, and a focus on safety, a time will come when you will be watching your child explore the world on two wheels with a smile on their face, and a sense of accomplishment in their heart.

Thanks for sharing this; useful tips!
I want to add another one. Go for rides with your kids and practice!
I've practiced the route from house to school and back many times with my kids before they were allowed to go on their own.
