La Trappe Trappist Quadrupel

(Edited)

Yeah a Trappist

The Easter Weekend is calling and there is a very special beer waiting since a few days at my fridge to jump out of the bottle

The monks made it and they know how to deliver a big smile into my face. Some people have chocolate or eggs and other dudes a Trappist ;-)

Hey Hive Family
enjoy a damn good beer
and let us travel the world again

La Trappe Trappist Quadrupel

or with other words „The Monk's Heavy Hitter“

The Beer

La Trappe Quadrupel doesn’t just walk into a room „it glides in“, robed in mahogany, holding a candle and humming Gregorian chants.

This is the original Trappist Quadrupel, the big brother of the La Trappe family, boasting a solid 10% ABV that lets you know from the first sip: this is not your average Saturday pint. I as well cried to be delivered to the weekly #beersaturday to spread

The flavor? Deep, complex, and as layered as a medieval sermon. Expect dried fruits like fig and date, a swirl of caramel, a little toffee, and a subtle banana-like yeastiness that ties everything together. There’s a warming alcohol presence—gentle but firm, like a monk tapping your shoulder after three glasses saying, “Enough, my child.”

The mouthfeel is rich and smooth, with just enough carbonation to lift those heavier notes. The finish? Long, malty, and a bit spicy, like a well told story you don't want to end and a tiny part of bitterness.

The Special "Something"

What makes La Trappe Quadrupel special is that it practically invented the style. First brewed in 1991, this was the world’s first official Quadrupel, setting the benchmark for strong, dark Trappist ales.

What I love about it is that it’s powerful without being aggressive. It unfolds slowly, reveals itself gradually, a bit like a well written novel or a late night theological debate. And while many strong ales go all in on booze and sugar, this one brings nuance: fruity esters, earthy depth, and a dry elegance that keeps you sipping thoughtfully.

It’s not just beer. It’s liquid contemplation for your #BeerSaturday

The Cover

The bottle wears its heritage proudly. The classic “La Trappe” typography, the authentic Trappist label, and that rich deep copper cap all signal: “This is the real deal.” No gimmicks, no shiny distractions—just clean design rooted in monastic tradition.

It’s not flashy, but when you hold the bottle, you feel the weight of centuries. And when you pour it into a goblet (because come on, this deserves more than a tumbler), the beer itself looks like autumn in a glass.

The Brewery - A Dutch trappist

Brewed by the De Koningshoeven Abbey in Berkel-Enschot, Netherlands, La Trappe is one of the few certified Trappist breweries in the world.

That means actual monks oversee the brewing process, and profits support their monastery and charitable work.

The abbey is nestled in a quiet corner of the Dutch countryside, where contemplation, prayer, and world class beer making coexist peacefully.

They also prioritize sustainability, using solar panels, water recycling, and even reusing waste heat to warm their buildings. So yes—your indulgence is practically eco-friendly.

A fun side note: La Trappe has a tasting room and a beautiful monastery café where you can sip this Quadrupel while surrounded by peaceful silence and the smell of monastery bread. Worth the pilgrimage.

Final Thoughts

La Trappe Trappist Quadrupel is a beer to be respected, savored, and maybe even meditated on. It’s not something you knock back at a BBQ. It’s a fireside companion, a book club reward, a moment of stillness in a noisy world.
It’s rich without being cloying, strong without being harsh, and historic without being dusty.

In short: it’s a masterpiece.

Drink it slowly, thank the monks, and try not to convert halfway through the bottle.

The happy ending

Naaaa, not what your dirty mind like think - this is a Beerlover world and the great part is something way more different. The Quadruple comes with some friends and they got delivered by some friends in a lovely box with an original tasting glass.

A big and well designed box with 4 time great work from monks in bottles - Plus a original glass to taste that beer.

Did I say that I love this long Easter weekend. Yeah - some bottles 🍺 are waiting while others search eggs 🥚 ;-)

I am in Hungary, it's in the local currency - HUF.

1 Euro is around 400 HUF. Craft beer on tap is usually 1400 to 2400 HUF per 0.4 glass.

For sure one of the best beers that I had when visiting a friend at Luxembourg. He is a beer connoisseur and we share one of those in a fine dinner at his house. More then 6 years passed since them, but I remember the moment like it was last week!
Enjoy the Easter, my friend! Thanks for all the details in this piece of art in for of ferment beverage!
