Finding solace in solitude: loneliness is not being alone

(Edited)

Loneliness and being alone are two distinct experiences that often get conflated. While being alone is a physical state, loneliness on the other hand is an emotional state. Being alone often comes as a result of one's choice, or a circumstance but loneliness is a feeling of disconnection from someone or something that adds to our joy.

As an introvert, I've mastered the act of being alone. Our space gives us more joy than hanging out with people, and that's probably because we find solace in solitude. Solitude to an introvert like me is a gift, and that's because it allows us to recharge and reconnect with ourselves. I can be alone without feeling lonely, being alone is only a physical separation from a physical companionship and not emotionally attached.

But loneliness is a different story, it's a longing for human presence that often causes an ache. Sometimes even in the midst of a crowd it strives, especially when we feel like an outcast, or feel unconnected with the people you're surrounded by. Loneliness often begins with a longing for belonging, to be understood, and it creeps in when we feel neglected and separated.

So while being alone is a choice, loneliness isn't, it's often a desire that aches to be fulfilled. Loneliness can be a burden that weighs us down and makes us feel a sense of low self esteem.

Advice for a lonely individual
I've realized that one thing which strengthens loneliness is fear. If we can share our fears more often, there's a high possibility to overcome the silence behind loneliness. Realizing that we are the author of our happiness will help us focus on building on things that make us happy and not rely on the approval of people to feel connected or appreciated. Loneliness sometimes can be as a result of losing a loved one who was once dear to us, in such a scenario, we ought to brace up and live the happy life he or she would have wanted you to live.

This part is really good ❤️

I haven't thought it like that. Since we keep what we feel to ourselves for fear that when we express it, people will reject us. Good point.
