Have you written up a Will and filed it, protecting your spouse and children? Take control of your estate, assets, or worldly possessions — make sure you leave behind to those you wish it to go to!

For someone who has faced what it means or feels like to not have a written will addressed to their spouse and children, I would say that it is high time spouses learn the act of protecting their spouse and children with a written will while they're gone. This mostly happens in the case when the man in the family dies and can not stand up for his family, so they suffer for this decision of not writing a will while he is alive.

There are incident that makes me kinda wonder if the family of the said deceased had been waiting for such things to happen, so they could express their hate towards the deceased spouse and children and forget that the deceased family (spouse and children) who are his immediate family will need all the help they can get, especially financially.

Some families are horrible at making sure the spouse and children of the deceased get nothing, that is why it is important that as a man or a woman, once you know that your assets or wealth are enough, it is important to write down a will to protect those that need to be protected once you are gone.

After being faced with such a challenge and watching my family go through critical situations and change, I realized that it would be in my best interest and that of my soon-to-be family to have a written will by the time I get to such a stage and I have also made a mental note that my spouse will also have a written will that will cover everyone and not put us in the open.

I get it that nobody prays for death, but then it happens and we all know that it is an unpredictable and unavoidable event, but preparing ourselves and making sure our family is safe when we are no more is the best we can do for ourselves and our family if we say we love them. Spouses and children get the bigger blow especially when they don't get supportive families, but yet still they are not considered when sharing properties, especially in the case where the man didn't have a written will.

They forget that written wills help their spouse and children fight lawfully for what is theirs just in case their other family tries to play smart with them or bully them into giving up their husband's and father's property. They also forget that in case we're there is a written will, it keeps the woman stable financially while she takes care of the children alone until she can stand firmly.

I have heard of stories where the spouse died and that same day the family got to find out about the news of the death of their son, they made their way to the house of their deceased son to enquiry about all his property and asked the man's spouse and children to vacate the building their we're living in as they had plans to sell it.

Not for the intervention of a neighbour who had intimated of the plans or perhaps what he felt would happen once the man's family came, so the wife of the deceased had removed all-important property documents out of the house, and driven her husband's cars out of the house except one which they frequently saw him with before the arrival of his family and this happened because the deceased man had no will he never believed in writing wills down for his family.

Most families have taken property away from a deceased spouse and children because the children were all women and in their place, women are not children, they can not keep the lineage of the man, so in their perception, they did not need their father's property. We still have most men who do not believe in writing wills and unfortunately, they met death when they least expected and this exposed their family to harm because most families still carry the idea that once their brother is no more, his property becomes ours, leaving the deceased spouse and children out with nothing.

It is terrible to see this happening to the survivors, worse is that it is so culturally ingrained and so widely practiced. 😒
Thanks for sharing @eliany

Yeah, people see it as a norm, so most times nobody blinks an eye when a particular family is going through this inhumane because they feel it is a cultural norm and must be done.

Thank you

All too often this rears it's ugly head, safest is to go together, document the Wills in mutual respect of each other and have them filed. Always remember to keep a copy in the home.

The way that so many extended families lay their hands on the properties of their deceased family member is very appalling.

They will even banish the deceased spouse and kids away like they're plagues from their own late father or mother's properties. Such a pity.
