A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: The Solar Vortex (ENG-ESP)

The scientist contemplated the structures visible in the sky. It intrigued him and he immediately felt that he would discover something that other scientists had not yet been able to decipher.

From an early age, climate physicist José had been intrigued by weather phenomena. He saw them as something mysterious that only he could solve. Thus began his love for this science and unexplained events, which led him to become obsessed, in his adulthood, with the Vortex of the sun that occurred once a year on the Island of Bermuda. He went there after having a bad goodbye with his wife.

Standing on an outcropping of limestone rocks, he began to recall his last conversation with her:

—You've become obsessed with the Solar Vortex —his wife said. You're going to abandon your family to go after some crazy adventure.

Joseph sighed deeply and tried to calm her down.

—My love, this is not an adventure or a meaningless obsession. It's my need to challenge the establishment, fueled by my insatiable curiosity. You met me and accepted me like this.

—You used to put family first—she replied, tears in her eyes. Now, you're willing to walk without thinking about what you're leaving behind.

—This time it's different, understand—José begged. I could be the first scientist to discover what is happening in Bermuda— he added, approaching his wife and taking her by the hands. I promise I will come back for our family. Trust me.

The woman kept silent and watched him leave. Her sad eyes remained in José's mind and tormented him, until a flash of light brought him back to the present, blinding him for an instant. It was the beginning of the solar Vortex of the year.

The sky darkened and arcs of light and smoke were glimpsed, like swirls in the sky. Joseph felt an inexplicable discomfort in his body, but he continued to stand there, analyzing what was happening. Suddenly, he discovered something in the center of the solar vortex. Another world? He opened his eyes wide and wanted to get closer, but he didn't know if by doing so, some unknown force would take him to the other side, so he waited to see what would happen next.

El científico, contempló las estructuras visibles en el cielo. Eso lo intrigó e inmediatamente sintió que descubriría algo que otros científicos aún no habían logrado descifrar.

Desde muy pequeño, el Doctor en física del clima, José, había estado intrigado por los fenómenos climáticos. Los veía como algo misterioso que solo él podía resolver. Así, comenzó su amor por esta ciencia y los eventos inexplicables, lo que lo llevó a obsesionarse, en su adultez, con el Vórtice de sol que ocurría una vez al año en la Isla de las Bermudas. Hacia allá se encaminó después de haber tenido una mala despedida con su mujer.

De pie, sobre un afloramiento de rocas calizas, comenzó a recordar su última conversación con ella:

—Te has obsesionado con el Vórtice solar—le dijo su esposa. Vas a abandonar a tu familia por ir tras una aventura descabellada.

José suspiró profundamente e intentó calmarla.

—Mi amor, no se trata de una aventura ni obsesión sin sentido. Es mi necesidad de desafiar lo establecido, alimentado por mi curiosidad insaciable. Me conociste y aceptaste así.

—Antes ponías a la familia en primer lugar— replicó ella, con lágrimas en los ojos. Ahora, estás dispuesto a caminar sin pensar en lo que dejas atrás.

—Esta vez es diferente, entiéndelo—rogó José. Podría ser el primer científico en descubrir lo que ocurre en Las Bermudas- añadió, acercándose a su esposa y tomándola de las manos. Te prometo que voy a regresar por nuestra familia. Confía en mí.

La mujer, guardó silencio y lo vio marcharse. Sus ojos tristes quedaron en la mente de José y lo atormentaron, hasta que un destello de luz lo devolvió al presente, cegándolo por un instante. Se trataba del inicio del Vórtice solar del año.

El cielo se oscureció y se vislumbraron arcos de luz y humo, como remolinos en el cielo. José sintió un inexplicable malestar en el cuerpo, pero continuó allí, analizando lo que ocurría. De repente, descubrió algo en el centro del Vórtice solar. ¿Otro Mundo? Abrió bien grande sus ojos y quiso acercarse más, pero no sabía si al hacerlo, alguna fuerza desconocida lo llevaría hacia el otro lado, por lo que aguardó a ver qué sucedería a continuación.
