A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: The Barber (ENG-ESP)

A famous barber in town manages to transform a scruffy customer into a heartthrob, while his friend, somewhat incredulous, comes to think that he is actually so talented that he can do magic with his hands.

It was an extremely hot day in the city, like every day during the summer, but barber Kim radiated as much happiness as ever. His barbershop was a cozy haven for many people, a place where the scent of aftershave mingled with laughter and chatter. I often found myself there, even if I didn't need a cut, just enjoying the atmosphere and the barber's good company.

Today, Kim had an unfamiliar client in the chair: a man with a scruffy beard and disheveled hair, as if he had survived a tornado. How disheveled! Kim would have to work magic to transform him into a person.

—Relax— Kim said to the customer, who looked nervous. Do you know what I'm doing? This is magic, my friend. You won't find another barber in this town with my talent, and maybe not even in the whole country— he proclaimed with his peculiar husky voice, his eyes fixed on what he was doing.

It was true that Kim's fame preceded him in every corner of the city, but in the country as well? I seemed to let out a disapproving gesture, for Kim looked at me as if trying to sweep my thoughts away.

—Well, well, well! You're cuter than Brad Pitt himself —she continued and waved her razor as if painting a masterpiece.

The client snorted, but deep down, Kim's statement must have given him some hope.

—Now I'll hand you the mirror so you can see your makeover— said Kim, as she continued working.

With precise movements, Kim began to tell stories about his exploits at the barbershop. She told of a customer who came in with a hairstyle so bizarre it made her laugh out loud, and how she had transformed a curly-haired man into a beau. Each story was more absurd than the last, and the customer, little by little, calmed down.

As Kim was about to finish, I decided I would listen to more of his stories sitting in a corner, but I looked over at the client and stood in awe, unable to move. His hair, now perfectly coiffed, and his beard, which had once looked like an out-of-control bush, had become a work of art.

Wow, maybe Kim's magic really did exist, I thought to myself.

Un barbero famoso en la ciudad logra transformar a un cliente desaliñado en un galán, mientras su amigo, algo incrédulo, llega a pensar que en realidad es tan talentoso al punto de hacer magia con sus manos.

Era un día extremadamente caluroso en la ciudad, como todos los días durante el verano, pero el barbero Kim irradiaba tanta felicidad, como siempre. Su barbería era un refugio acogedor para mucha gente, un lugar donde el aroma del la loción de afeitar se mezclaba con risas y charlas. A menudo me encontraba allí, aunque no necesitara un corte, simplemente disfrutando del ambiente y de la buena compañía del barbero.

Hoy, Kim tenía un cliente desconocido en la silla: un hombre con barba desaliñada y el pelo revuelto, como si hubiera sobrevivido a un tornado. ¡Qué desarreglado! Kim tendría que hacer magia para transformarlo en una persona.

—Relájate —dijo Kim al cliente, que parecía nervioso—. ¿Sabes lo que estoy haciendo? Esto es magia, amigo mío. No encontrarás otro barbero en esta ciudad con mi talento, y quizá ni siquiera en todo el país —proclamó con su peculiar voz ronca, y los ojos fijos en lo que hacía.

Era cierto que la fama de Kim le precedía en todos los rincones de la ciudad, pero ¿también del país? Me pareció que se me escapó un gesto de desaprobación, pues Kim me miró como si tratara de barrer mis pensamientos.

—¡Bien, bien, bien! Estás más lindo que el mismísimo Brad Pitt —continuó diciendo y movió su navaja de afeitar como si pintara una obra maestra.

El cliente resopló, pero de seguro en el fondo, la declaración de Kim le dio cierta esperanza.

—Ahorita te paso el espejo para que veas tu cambio de imagen —dijo Kim, mientras seguía trabajando.

Con movimientos precisos, Kim empezó a contar historias sobre sus hazañas en la barbería. Habló de un cliente que llegó con un peinado tan extraño que le hizo reír a carcajadas, y de cómo había transformado a un hombre de pelo rizado en un galán. Cada historia era más absurda que la anterior, y el cliente, poco a poco, se fue calmando.

Cuando Kim estaba a punto de terminar, decidí que escucharía más de sus historias sentado en un rincón, pero miré al cliente y me quedé boquiabierto, incapaz de moverme. Su pelo, ahora perfectamente peinado, y su barba, que antes parecía un arbusto fuera de control, se habían convertido en una obra de arte.

Guao, quizás la magia de Kim existía de verdad, pensé para mis adentros.
