8th Rafael Cadenas National Youth Poetry Contest // 8vo Concurso Nacional de Poesía Joven Rafael Cadenas (ENG/ESP)

These last few weeks have been quite busy: changing planes, dealing with the Venezuelan health system (that's another long, long story), passing semesters, celebrating life, sharing moments, drinking wine, going to new places, attending awards ceremonies... The event I've come to record today is the awards ceremony for the eighth edition of the Rafael Cadenas National Youth Poetry Competition. Held in the spaces of La Poeteca, on 25 July.

Estas últimas semanas fueron bastante movidas: cambiar de planos, lidiar con el sistema de salud venezolano (ese es otro cuento laaaargo) lograr aprobar semestres, celebrar la vida, compartir momentos, tomar vino, asistir a lugares nuevos, acompañar premiaciones… El acontecimiento que vengo a registrar hoy es la ceremonia de premiación del Concurso Nacional de Poesía Joven Rafael Cadenas, en su octava edición. Celebrada en los espacios de La Poeteca, el pasado 25 de julio.

The competition seeks to pay homage to the recent winner of the Cervantes Prize: Rafael Cadenas; it also aims to encourage new forms of communication between young people and their environment through the artistic creation of poetic texts, and in addition to this, the reading of Venezuelan writers of poetry. In this sense, the competition becomes a fertile space for the establishment and expansion of sensitivity.

El concurso busca homenajear al reciente ganador del premio Cervantes: Rafael Cadenas; además pretende incentivar nuevas formas de comunicación entre los jóvenes y su entorno, a través de la creación artística de textos poéticos, y aunado a ello, la lectura a escritores venezolanos de poesía. En tal sentido, el concurso se vuelve un espacio fértil para el asentamiento y expansión de la sensibilidad.

All young people between the ages of 18 and 30, born in Venezuela, are welcome to participate. The contest has been held annually since 2016 and over the years it has been joined by various organisations such as Fundación la Poeteca, Banesco Banco Universal and TeamPoetero. For me the most beautiful thing is that at the end of each edition, they publish anthologies that include the winners as well as the honourable mentions and the finalists.

Son bienvenidos a participar todos los jóvenes entre los 18 y 30 años, nacidos en Venezuela. El concurso se lleva a cabo anualmente desde el 2016 y a lo largo de los años se le han ido sumando diversas organizaciones como Fundación la Poeteca, Banesco Banco Universal y TeamPoetero para su realización. Para mí lo más bonito es que al final de cada edición, publican antologías que guardan tanto a los ganadores como a las menciones honorificas y los finalistas. Espero con ansias mi copia para pedir a mis amigos ganadores que lo firmen.

This year there were 3 winners, 2 honourable mentions and 16 finalists, among the latter was the reason why I ventured into this whole contest thing, my beloved boyfriend Elio Esposito. He participated with a voice that lately is not the one he uses the most or perhaps one that was his many moons ago and now only remains in those images that he managed to transform into words. I am very happy to have shared that moment with him. At the ceremony all the attendees shared their winning poems and it was a simply magical act.

Este año hubo 3 ganadores, 2 menciones honorificas y 16 finalistas, entre estos últimos estaba el motivo por el que me aventuré en todo este asunto del concurso, mi amado novio Elio Esposito. Participó con una voz que últimamente no es la que más usa o quizá una que fue suya hace muchas lunas y ahora solo queda en aquellas imágenes que logró transforman en palabras. Estoy muy feliz de haber compartido este momento con él. En la ceremonia todos los asistentes compartieron sus poemas ganadores y fue un acto sencillamente mágico.

Esta última foto me hace mucha gracia. Cuéntame que lectura le darías a la foto. ¿Qué estaba pasando en ese momento según la postura corporal de cada persona?

I share with you photos of the toast. Of some signatures. And with the majestic Rafael Cadenas. The director of La Poeteca, at some point joked that photos were taken with Cadenas and then sold for 20$, in that case, the ones I took are worth much more because they are, besides Cadenas, part of the winners of the 8th Rafael Cadenas National Youth Poetry Competition.
