Last first time

....JPG

A short time ago I did something for the first time, a reasonably major thing that in the past I'd never thought I'd do.

I was pretty good at it, not great, and I guess if I'm totally honest good at it might be a generous assessment; let's just say, I didn't totally suck at it, and I think that's a pretty acceptable result. The main thing, and the best part, was that I pushed my limits and to some degree my paradigm through doing something I'd previously not expected or thought I'd do which sort of resets my mindset and creates a new reality; I'm pleased with that and the enjoyment factor also.

I've done so many things in my life and have no complaints about the opportunities that have presented themselves and which I've created on my own accord; some have been necessities like work, relationship or general life related things and others I've wanted to do for enjoyment, the challenge, to help others and various other reasons. Looking back on those things, *many of them were "firsts," meaning things I'd not previously done, and in each case I've found value in getting out of my comfort zone, challenging my mind and body, pushing through fears and doubt and generally getting shit done. I believe it's one of the reasons I can look back on the past with little regret and it's also allowed me to create what I feel is a reasonably fulfilled life.

"You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself." - Alan Alda

Thinking on the idea of "firsts" I thought I'd put it out there and ask you folks about your own, and your last first specifically.

When and what was your last first?

If you want to comment you're welcome to do that below and outline when the last time you did something for the first time was, what you did, why you did it and any other thoughts around it.

As always, I'll engage with any comments left and drop a few votes here and there.

My last first is joining #HHHLive a month ago, which is hosted by our friend ph1102 at Hive every Wednesday English is not my native language, and I very rarely have the opportunity to speak in English, so I was really "rusty". The problem is, not only that I don't speak (so my pronunciation is sometimes funny), but also because I don't have the opportunity to think in English, so sometimes it's very difficult for me to find the right word And then I get stuck. But that time, I think it was OK. All the participants knew that it was my first live participation in my life and they even praised me 😁

And you, what did you do?🙂

Speaking or communicating in a language one speaks badly or not very confidently can be a big issue and quite stressful. It seems you did ok though. Well done.

As for what I did...on this occasion I'll not say. 🤐

As long as they are not illegal activities, everything is OK 😁

My last first is travelling alone this year. I had opportunity to travel, but I had no one available to come with me or to go together, thus I broke the shell of mine and went alone. It was better than I expected ;) From now on, I think I won't need any one whenever I want to travel.

That's a good one and a great revelation for yourself; travelling alone can seem really daunting but little by little one learns how to do it better and it becomes less troublesome or worrying.

At least, I decide where to visit, where to take photos and how many times to spend for a monument.

Having that sort of autonomy can be great, the ability to do what you want, when you want.

Wellllll I don't know if that counts but my last first was a hectic one... a bad experience but not as bad as I thought!

Not exactly something to my choosing but the value I gained from it was immense.

Me and the Betty went down to the seaside for a vacation and halfway there the car broke down, hectic stuff... it was a panicky thing at first and then it was a chilled experience... one that I never thought O'd experience becauze I try and keep the vehicles in tip top shape... but life has too throw you a curve ball and you have to experience that ball punching your teeth out!

Laughs! Now I can be stranded, wont mind it... wont like it but at the end of the day I'll be fine...

It can be confronting when stuff like that happens for the first time and even more when one is in a remote or potentially unsafe location. A good learning experience though.

Few months ago I bought catfish fillet for the first time. It was better than I expected. So now I buy it more often. Even now we have a few in a fridge.

You're an awful tease sure you are, leaving us all wondering.
I can't think of a thing at all that I've done for the first time, though I did kick one of our dogs into a fast running stream last month, by accident...of course. She quickly disappeared down stream and despite my assurances to my brother that dogs can swim, he ran hither and tither wailing and screaming about how I'd killed Piglet. It was comical to watch. I wish I'd had a camera. Five minutes later she came trotting up the road, none the worse for wear.

It's nothing too terrible or exciting really, but I don't like to put everything on the internet. I think it's surprise a few people if I said it though; make some eyes pop.

One must do so with regularity...preferably with someone else's dog, or their fucken kids.

My last first time: someone needed help, but a kind of help that I wouldn't have given before, but that person inspired me to do it, gave me confidence and security.

He didn't expect what I did, but it was a health issue, and it was necessary to act fast. I know that I value him very much and I am very satisfied with what I did.... for the first time.

My last first was raising and harvesting Meat chickens. We've had chickens for some time but I wanted to become more self sustainable especially with the price of groceries nowdays. So last june we bought 14 meat chicks from the feed store.

Never in my life did I butcher chickens. But being a hunter I figured it was no different than killing a deer, mentally. When the day came to harvest them I was anxious as hell. But followed everything I read online and things went relatively smoothly.

Because of the experience I plan on buying 50 chicks next year with the hopes of not only filling my freezer but also my siblings, and selling any excess to make up for feed costs!

Well done on finding some more self reliance, something that is quite important in life now for obvious reasons. It's good to get out of one's comfort zone now and then and build skills that can make for a better future. Nice work indeed!

Hi Galen. I don't remember when was the last thing I did for the first time. What I have just done is to redo my whole life plan looking forward to a better future. I don't think it's the first time I've done it, but if it's the first time I've burned all the ships like Alexander the Great, there's no turning back.

In a few years I hope to write a nice publication in Hive telling how well I got out of my comfort zone.

My last first was at the beginning of the year.

My girlfriend and I decided to go climbing in the land of tobacco (Pinar del Rio), and it's something I will definitely do again.

I wasn't good at all at first, and I think it requires some training, but I had an unforgettable experience, many laugh time, and sharing it with my partner made it even better , cool to remembered 😅

That's a good one and something you'll probably do again and enjoyed so definitely a good "first".

I guess I am pretty lame. I can't really think of anything except maybe going on a charter fishing trip with my friend. I have a feeling that isn't the last thing I did though. There were likely other thing that were much more mundane that are just slipping my mind right now.

In the past few weeks, we've been shrimping. We bought a trap in Japan and have been enjoying fresh shrimp for dinner. There's a big learning curve to find the steep spots with rocks, but once you know how, you get the hang of it quickly. Let me tell you, the taste is nothing like what you find in the supermarket!

That's a good one!

It's amazing how different food can taste when gathered direct from the source. Supermarket food is largely rubbish, produced to a cost and mostly always frozen. There's nothing quite like food from the source. Nice first...not your last time to do it I'm sure.

Definitely not, but maybe for this season! We’ll try to hit one or two spots before we pack the trap away.

I had to say something here. I'm doing things for the first time very often lately. The last one was cycling through the Havana forest and drinking a jar of beer while listening to reggaeton 😱😶😅 in Almendares park (what one does for friends!). That same day I visited a synthetic football field that I didn't even know existed. A great irony considering that I was the photographer in charge of covering sports for the magazine where I had worked since 2008. 🤐 On the latter, I don't know what to say. Because not even by chance did I ever find out about it, not even by watching the sports news on TV.

Reggaeton? That's hideous! Lol.

Doing something for the first time is a good way to expand one's thinking, to learn and development so good work in that, keep it up. (Not the Reggaeton though...unless you really want to )

No, reggaeton doesn't expand my mind. But I understand that the whole day couldn't be perfect.

Replacing a metal roof. I have done shingles many times over the years.

This is a first. And a quite high 24x48 foot pole barn at about 20 feet high.
