Looking glass

chi=-05xxEffgtQ (4).jpg

It's a misleading title, I do that from time to time; what would be more accurate is, looking at glass, because a few weeks ago that's exactly what I was doing...and in a really cool setting as well.

I can't recall the last time I used or looked through glass and said, "this glass is really cool", it's one of those things most of us use and take for granted but imagine life without it. We'd get bugs in our teeth when we drive our cars, wouldn't have mirrors, camera lenses, spectacles, windows, mobile phones and tech, tableware, specific medical equipment, packaging, fibre optic cables, air travel...the list is very long and life would be very different. But when did I ever say or think, "thanks glass, you're fucken awesome?" Never actually.

Ok, that's not altogether true either because a few weeks ago I went to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens for a wander around the Dale Chihuly exhibition of glass artworks and said, "fucking hell, this glass is cool."

chi=-05xxEffgtQ (1).jpg

Dale Chihuly is an American artist known near and far for his striking artworks which is represented in over 200 museum collections around the world and these particular glassworks have been displayed around the globe in such places as Singapore's Gardens by the Bay and London's Kew Gardens as well as across the United States of America...and now the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

The artworks are lit at night and for $25 entry per person one can wander the gardens (also lit up) and marvel at the rather large glass artworks. I've not been at night (I'm time poor), but have been during the day and here's some pictures from that day.

chi=-05xxEffgtQ (6).jpg

I've not put all of the artworks into this post but you'll get the general idea I think.

With names like: The Sun, Lime Icicle Tower, Fiori Boat, Lima and Lava Tower, Float Boat and Niijima Floats, Sapphire Star, Ethereal Spring Persians and Glacier Ice and Lapis Chandelier and others, I guess one could expect something different and that's what Chihuly delivers.

I've used a couple of these images on posts in the last week or so and had a few questions on what they were so here's the answer.

I love nature and spending time in it; I don't have any need for human input to enjoy nature, other than my own of course because I'm there and I'm human, but the addition of Dale Chiuly's artwork was something different in a place I know well and I think complimented the gardens well, not enhanced, simply added something quite unique but still kind of natural in nature.

That is pretty awesome! I think I can tell which one is "the sun". I visited the Maker's Mark bourbon distillery a while ago and in one of the rooms the wife had a collection of glass art that had been commissioned for her. They were all really beautiful. In the town where I live they have a glass blowing studio where you can go and take classes. I've always thought about stopping in.

I've seen glass blowing done at a studio as you mention and it's pretty cool how they do it, no hands of course, not without the right protective equipment. I reckon it'd be worth the trip for you to check it out.

The problem is, I know the person who runs it and she isn't one of my favorite people, so I might have to find a different place to check out!

Ooh those are nice. I have a love/hate relationship with glass and glass things. Glass artwork is so amazingly cool, especially when you watch them making it, and glass itself is so very useful, but it's also so very breakable and sharp when broken x_x

perhaps the hate part of the love/hate comes from the fact I am a klutz

Watching glass being made into things is mesmerising and quite amazing; get it wrong and one gets a pretty serious ouchy.

I've seen it done a few times around the place and it never ceases to captivate me, the innovative ways they get it all together.

I think you'd be good at it being a klutz would make you really bad at it. 🥴😂

LoL never mind bad at it I wouldn't be brave enough to go anywhere near that, that's both molten hot and potentially breakable, both things I avoid like the plague! XD

Nothing quite as good as a bit of molten glass on one's hand, said no one ever.

That is some vibrant and creative stuff.

I have always tried to remain creative in my life, appreciate are and even create some in the form of music mainly. That being the case, a life as an artist like this fantastic one seems like something out of a fairy tale. These creations are mesmerizing and somehow manage to decorate the nature much of it is in.

Such neat pieces and definitely photography friendly.

Cool right?

They're quite large too, unortunately the images don't really show that, and it was nice to sit back and contemplate each and how they fit into the environment and to marvel at the mind and hands that created them.

I like what you said about creativity and for sure music is creative, I play several musical instruments myself, and my dad was a fairly popular artist so grew up with creativity.

Anyway, if you get a chance to see these, hopefully it's in a garden setting as well. Worth a look for sure.

Those pieces are beautiful! I especially love the lapis chandelier and the blue orbs on the pond. In the same photos as the brilliant blue sky, the blue glass pops out even more vividly. They probably carry an equally amazing pop at night when they are all lit up. Seems like it would be magical

It was quite nice indeed, a nice day out generally from a weather and activities perspective. I also went to the museum to see a Viking hoard display (visiting from Scotland) a post will happen in a week of so when I get around to it.

As for the artworks, I really want to go at night as I think they'll look completely the same but different so I'm going to try and make it happen when I have some time.

It looks so beautiful. Enhancing the beauty of the garden, and gives it more color. I think it's more captivating at night. Imagining it lit up, I'm already mesmerized.

Wow, those are so well made, I would have never thought that these sculptures were made out of glass from these photos if you hadn't said they were.

Quite cool indeed, pretty big too! I found myself wondering how they hell they transported them, considering glass is so fragile I reckon they would have been pretty well packed though.

Hi @galenkp, I was amazed at how well these glass works fit in with the landscape. They look like they were created by Nature itself. I'm not surprised at all that you enjoyed this landscape and these glass works of art so much.

Yeah they're really good and even better in person that in photographs. If you ever get the chance to see this exhibition, hopefully in a garden setting like this, I hope you take it.

I think there was a Dale Chihuly exhibition near where I live in 2007. I hope there will be another one soon so I can enjoy it. I didn't know this artist, so thank you for featuring him on your blog.

What can I say... I was left open-mouthed with so much beauty, what beautiful works of art!!!! The colours, the shapes and the combination with nature is marvellous, I love everything! The flowers on the water I think it's my favourite, because it's very difficult to choose.

Thank you for this, it fascinates me !!!!

Pretty good huh?

I went there about three weeks ago now and only just got the chance to do the post but looking at the images even now feels impactful. #goodart

Very good art and complements the greatest artist of all, nature. A publication that left me delighted! Yes!

Love the community, never seen it before. But your photos don't fit the shit criteria.

This place, from photos and your description, reminds me of a place in Brazil called Inhotim. Try to search about it, but it's a mix of botanic garden and arts exhibition. One of the coolest places I've been ever.

Thank you for explaining what those blue things on the water were and showing us so many other works of art, really very original and beautiful.

With that blue sky they really are much better appreciated, although obviously I have not seen them with a cloudy sky 🤭. And at night they are surely a great show, although in the daytime too, of course.

You're welcome. It was nice to see them, pretty large things really, in that setting. I'm glad the post was able to add some clarity and perspective for you.
