Luck by design
It's easy to forget how lucky we are sometimes...and when I say "we" I really mean "me" I suppose because you're you and I'm me.
I don't mean I am ungrateful, far from it; I have an amazing life, a sexy partner who I care about and who cares in return, all of what I need and much of what I want, a home, vehicles, health (mainly) and I live in a safe and prosperous country. I'd say that's a lot to be grateful for and I am truly grateful for all of it...and the hard work I've put in to bring it into being of course. I have a gratitude-ethos, no doubt.
What I mean is how lucky I am to have been born in this country to parents who raised me well - as best they knew how - and that I've worked towards being the man I am with the things I have around me in my life based on how they raised me. It was luck (I guess) that caused me to be born here in Australia and not a third-world or war-torn country or to parents who didn't know how to raise me or instill good morals and ethics. Yeah, fucken hell I feel lucky to have been born where, and to whom I was all those years ago.
I'm away from home currently, somewhere far away from cities and people, the society I usually feel quite disconnected from, and I love it...I have time to look inwardly and, of course, time to look around me and feel lucky I'm there...lucky that I put myself there through ownership, effort, discipline, learning from failure and building on successes.
Of course, it's not really luck at all...maybe luck by design, is a better way to describe it, as I have focused myself towards creating my life to resemble the image I have of it in my mind and worked hard to shape it, to design and create it, as close as possible to that image.
Anyway, I've spent far too much time writing this, a whole ten minutes, which has been part of my morning gratitude-thoughts, so it's time I focus my attention on my surroundings, brew my coffee on the fire, get some bacon and eggs sizzling in the pan on that same fire, and get back to living in the real world...and when that world looks like it does in this image...well, it's all good right?

I feel lucky in spite of living so many things and in a third world country with a shitty economy you would laugh if you knew how much is the monthly salary in my country, but I do not complain thanks to GOD, I always find a way to fight and get ahead at least I have health your picture is beautiful
People have a lot more than at first they might think and you mention o ne of those...health. Without it one has very little indeed.
Ah luck. What the hell is it really?
Many times, luck is just preparedness meeting opportunity. Sure it is random, kinda, but you put yourself in the position to be lucky in that moment. Things going well for someone don't happen for no reason. We do create our own luck which doesn't mean we are immune to bad luck. Perhaps bad luck is just unpreparedness meeting that same opportunity.
Anyway, I think it is more gratitude and chosen happiness, contentedness in the moment than luck.

Luck? What is it? It's something that a person creates I guess...People call me lucky but it's hard work and effort that has put me into the position I have...not luck. (A fuck load of hard work and effort.)
Those of us who were "lucky" enough to be born in a third world country are also proud of our homeland. Of course, everything would be better if there were no categories to designate the countries of this world. In the end, the earth is one and we are all its children.
That pride that you feel goes beyond the welfare that you have "touched" for having been born in Australia. I can assure you that I feel something similar in spite of living where I live.
Just to have that view you share is enough to feel that you were born in the right place.👍
Yep, Australia is an awesome place...but make no mistake, nothing comes for free...hard work pays off.
For me, it's not a country that you were born but the life you choose, for an instance a person born in a third world country which poverty is rampant, it's not unlucky that he or she was born in state but rather what she or he can do to change the fate, sometimes luck can be reside but hard work and patience pay offs well. Those hard work will bear it's fruit and that person will achieve that dream and escape from harsh reality of life.
Maybe there are instances that people born in first world are blessed due to support of family and by the government but it's still mesmerizing to see people survive poverty and became successful due to own efforts. Hope you didn't mind this perspective of mine.❤️
I don't care where a person is from...applying effort will always create better results than not applying effort.
I'm sure luck definitely has something to do with where my life is right now. I prefer to consider myself blessed. Whenever I find myself getting judgy about someone in a different position than me I remember that a simple twist of fate could take away everything I have built. We are always one lucky break away from living in that third world country or a similar situation at home.
Luck and probably some effort I'd say.

A fee things of what type have there as you have described it, is lucky for where you started.
But you also exerted plenty effort to bring about the total that you have. It's great that you can admit to your blessings and head-start in terms of family/country. Many in a position of privilege do not.
People also tend to sit back and chill when they are born to it, which I don't feel that you do. So good on you!
Myself as an adult needed to realize exactly how bad a position I started at, and be more happy and proud of my situation and accomplishments. You see, I was frustrated by my lack of achievements. But through careful thought and checking my perspective, I realized that I was judging myself too harshly.
Luck has played no part in what I've created, just some of the occurrences that happened along the way which caused me to work harder. Luck (good or bad), happenstance, chance and so on...things we can't always control...But we can control how hard we work and that plays a part in what we ultimately create.
Sometimes, no matter how hard I work, it does not seem like I am getting anywhere financially... I shall keep working though, on and off Hive... as hard as I can for as long as I can.
I am providing for the family after all. Three kids all teens now... just got to keep pushing for a while longer.
It seems like that sometimes. I know many who are behind the eight ball which seems easy to do but very hard to get out of. Keep working at it.

I am trying to design a better life, I am very grateful, although sometimes I complain a lot too, but many things can definitely be better, in my life.
I remember with some frequency the question that you once put as a proposal for your weekend community, the one about if you consider that you are living the best life you can live, remembering that question sometimes encourages me to keep going and I thank you for that.
On the other hand, it is good that you have created this community, it is very interesting, although I think your photo doesn't fit here because it looks beautiful.

I am actually praying and working towards having an ideal life I want for myself and my parents. Nigeria is really a tough country at the moment and I myself don't think this is a place that is ideal for me to choose to spend the best years of my life in. My plan is to have enough money to atleast explore and stay in another country entirely and from there I can think of giving myself the ideal and the best life I have always wished for. As you said luck was on your side maybe luck will be on my side as well for me atleast gather enough to leave this country on time

I will go for Canada or maybe England because I have people staying there so it will be easier
I am grateful to my mother for reading me many books as a child. And from the age of 9, I myself began to read 3-4 books a week. For this reason, it was easy for me to study at school and university, and then search for the necessary information on the Internet.

I think it is luck derived from our ancestors...if they had decided to move elsewhere, things would be different.. So I would say luck AND as you say personal worth - ethos as you call it ..
There is no luck but that which we create through effort.
I think that luck is that I was born in Europe and not Africa or North Korea. Luck is that my cancer was curable and not lethal. Luck is meeting the right person.
I agree with you that we do things that affect the above. But there is some element of luck too (right circumstances, things that were already there for us etc)

I don't know but something about coffee made in an 'unconventional way' makes it so much more delicious and special.
I was lucky that on the day that I was born the freedom movement took the flag out into the streets for the first time since occupation. Fast forward two years and we got our country back, something that in the light of Ukraine cannot be taken for granted. The more I think about it the more it feels like an actual miracle.
That's how I was 'lucky'.

I guess luck happens, good or bad, but I like to take a more active role in my life where possible rather than hoping good luck will occur naturally...better to work towards creating it.
One question, have you always had that same mindset or did it develop with age? It took me many years to get into the gratitude thing. As a child I thought myself cursed with little to be grateful for. A wise nun once told me that every situation is just that, neither positive or negative and it's your reaction to it that determines the outcome. I pondered this for some considerable time before realising that I was author of my own woeful tale and giving myself a good kick in the arse.
As an adult mostly, although I learned it along the way like most I suppose...the harder the lessons the more I learned. (Had some pretty difficult lessons in life, tough situations.)
I like what that nun told you, a valuable lesson to learn in life for sure. I suppose the older we get the more we pay attention to the experiences, the more mature we are, and so they stick with us a little better.

With the passing of life and time I learnt that my life is my responsibility and everything that happens to me, when I learnt that I decided to make a radical change and have a well defined objective in mind to achieve and I am on the path that I set for myself.
That phrase I liked a lot: Luck by design, luck does not exist but if I design something it is highly probable to be ‘lucky’ about it.

I've often felt the same about being born in a fairly safe place, (compared to many other places) and into a family where I had caring parents that raised me the best they knew how with good life values. It's helped me as I've gone through life's ups and downs, knowing my family would always be there if I fell, like a mental safety net. It helped me to have courage to go forward and I've managed to stay on my feet and make my own way.
I don't have all those things and I know there are advantages to it, but I've always loved my ability to adapt and regroup and appreciate wherever I am and whatever I have. . There is SO much to be thankful for and I try to stay conscious of that.
I'm glad you are somewhere having fun and living in a few moments of peaceful bliss.
It was sheer chance where each of us were born and who our parents were meaning you or I had nothing to do with it. However, it is each individual human that has shaped their own life positively or negatively through thoughts and actions, reactions too, and that's where luck or chance play less of a role. I think, like you say, it's worthy of taking a moment to think about that effort, the journey, and to be grateful for it...even the bad things as they help shape us too (if turned to our advantage through our subsequent actions.
I wrote something about being grateful as well and how a lot of us do a lot of complaining without taking time to stop and realize how lucky we really are. Like you, I grew up in a relatively wealthy country and although my own family was not rich, we were comfortable and I had both parents who put their heart and souls into raising me and my siblings. Just that alone is enough to be extremely grateful for!
Living overseas has shown me how a great deal of the world grows up with almost no chance of having even a bit of what we in the west totally take for granted. In Vietnam the average monthly wage is around $200 and there is no chance to move ahead in life with that being the case.
It isn't just about money but that is a big part of it for sure. One thing I have noticed when observing the poor in this and other surrounding countries, is that the family unit is normally very strong and this benefits all of them, despite their relative poverty, immensely. I think that the western world has largely forgotten how important family is and all of us should take a moment to realize how our families are the most important things in our lives and we should cherish them while we can.
Gratitude feels good and i think is respectful of the things and people we have around us, reminds us of what it took to get them or maintain relationships and I think that helps the future look better and better.
An attitude of gratitude is a wise one to have. All throughout life I have been grateful for where and to whom I was born. (proper use of whom?? I don't know) While I agree that hard work and effort play a very major role in a person's position in life, a fraction of luck, be it good or bad, still exists.
A few times in my life I got lazy (or as I call it numb lol) and just let life buffet me around without much direct input from me. It was during these times that my most creative ideas came into being and so I was even grateful for those downturns.
Life will always have ups and downs and it is easier to navigate with gratitude, patience and humor.

Yes, luck plays a hand, maybe chance is what we should call it, happenstance. And as you point out, luck can be good or bad...it's how we then react to either that matters and that which can affect us moving forward in various ways. It's at those times when effort comes to the fore.
