In August this year, my daughter visited Switzerland again. This time her itinerary was to visit the Swiss Alps and do some hiking in the Jungfrau, as they call it. Their home base in Switzerland was in Geneva where they stayed when not touring the Alps. No snow yet at that time as it was summer, still the view was breathtaking nonetheless. While in Geneva, she and her friends visited the United Nations (who doesn't when in Geneva?) and other tourists spots. One of these is the Geneva Lake where they were able to swim thanks to the warm weather. And that is where the fun began with their Feathered Friend adventure.

While laying down to relax along the shores of the lake, my daughter and company were surprised to meet an unexpected visitor. A chubby, somewhat clumsy moving and big feathered creature. He seemed just as surprised with all the humans around. Where were her kind? "What are you all doing here?" she seemed to be asking. "Do you know this is my turf?"

Friends, welcome the Mute Swan (Cygnus olor). It is a swan specie and a member of the waterfowl family Anatidae. The name "mute" derives from it being less vocal than other swan species like the Trumpeter and Tundra Swans. Measuring 125 to 160 cm (49 to 63 in) in length, the Mute Swan is a large swan, wholly white in plumage with an orange beak bordered with black. It is recognizable by its pronounced knob atop the beak, which is larger in males. Now how does it differ from the other two swan species? Here's what I dug up. The Trumpeter Swan is much larger, stretching as long as 6 feet in length and 25 pounds in weight. It is distinguished from the Mute Swan by its bill which is entirely black with broad connection of black facial skin to the eye. The voice of the Trumpeter Swan is also louder. The Tundra Swan is also large but smaller than the Trumpeter. The Tundra also has a black bill but usually has a yellow spot at the base.

Now back to the encounter with the Feathered Friend the swan seems to be in an inquisitive mood as he investigated the humans all around him.

Wow, is he a big bird. He's almost as big as the kid inside the tent. He approached them like he wanted them to know they were crashing his area.

Oh well. I never really got to find out what eventually happened but I guess all's well that ends well. My entry to this Round is the first photo.

All for now. Best of luck to all the participants. Stay safe and may you all have a blessed weekend.
