SMAP 156 Show Me A Photo - The Red Maya

I have often featured this particular bird in SMAP past which used to be, until 1995, the national bird of my country, the Philippines. The Red Maya, commonly known as the Chestnut munia or black-headed munia (Lonchura atricapilla) is a small passerine or perching bird. It was chosen as the country's national bird because of its high survival rate and adaptability. Proponents of this specie as national bird says it stays closer to the ground thus reflect more the social classes and issues of the country. Presenting the Red Maya.

These red mayas are so small. They are the size of sparrows and they usually go by groups, hugging low and perching on stalks of grass. Being small and almost weightless, a stalk can hold more than 4 of them at the same time.
