Wandering the Alleys of Albaicín, Granada, Spain

If you ever book a tour across the south of Spain, Granada would undoubtedly be on the itinerary. Most tour guides will lead you along with the crowds up the hill, where one of the world's most famous palaces, the Alhambra, towers above the city. However, traveling with a travel agency is dumb, particularly in such a safe region as the EU. So, let the tour guides-led crowds flow and join me as we climb up another hill, one with Las Santas Cuevas, the Holy Caves. We'll leisurely stroll through the historic gypsy neighborhood known as Albaicín.

Pokud si koupíte nějaký poznávají zájezd po jižním Španělsku, Granadu cestovka určitě nevynechá. Pravděpodobně vás vyloží někde pod Alhambrou, jedním z nejznámějších paláců světa, a pak vás potáhnou spolu s davy dalších turistů nahoru. Ale cestovat s cestovkou je podle mého hloupé, zejména v tak bezpečném koutě světa, jako je Evropská unie. Takže nechme davy turistů i s jejich průvodci pochodovat na Alhambru a já vás mezitím vezmu na jiný kopec. Je zvláštní mimo jiné tím, že jsou na něm Las Santas Cuevas, Svaté jeskyně. A taky se projdeme po staré cikánské čtvrti Albaicín.

Those familiar with Spanish culture understand that our journey must begin at the statue of Mario Maya, one of the most renowned flamenco dancers of all time. Though he was born in Córdoba, another beautiful Andalusian city I've blogged about, he grew up and fell in love with flamenco here in Albaicín.

Moc opravdových znalců španělské kultury tu asi nebude. A tak vás nebudu napínat, začneme u sochy jednoho z nejznámějších a nejvlivnějších tanečníků flamenca, Mario Mayi. Ten se sice narodil v Córdobě, o které už jsem tu párkrát psal, ale vyrůstal tady. A hlavně tu propadl flamencu.

Mario tančí na břehu malé říčky jménem Río Darro. Její údolí odděluje dva kopce, na kterých jsou Alhambra a Albaicín. A právě po nábřeží začneme procházku, která nás dovede až do srdce historického barria.

It doesn’t take long to reach the Palacio de los Córdova, a 16th-century villa with beautiful gardens, though they were not as astonishing in late December. At least, I spotted a kaki persimmon tree brimming with fruits. Moreover, the palace is open to the public, allowing you to admire its blend of Gothic and Mudéjar styles.

K Palacio de los Córdova, vile ze 16. století s krásnými zahradami, je to jen kousíček. Na konci prosince sice až tak úchvatné nebyly, ale všiml jsem si tu alespoň tomelu obsypaného kaki. Palác je veřejně přístupný, a tak se tu můžete pokochat i jeho architekturou s typickými gotickými a mudejárskými prvky.

Leaving the gardens behind, let’s continue up the hill. The typical narrow cobbled alleys of Albaicín start just a stone's throw away from the palace. They offer marvelous views, especially the ones heading south – you can spot the Alhambra across the river through them. The higher you climb, the better views you get.

Protože není vedro k padnutí, můžeme směle nechat zahrady za námi a pokračovat do kopce. Charakteristické úzké uličky Albaicínu začínají už pár kroků odsud. Jsou vskutku malebné. A ty, které vedou na jih, vám umožní pokukovat po Alhambře.

Albaicín isn’t vast, as you can tell from the tiny little houses and churches resembling chapels in size. Yet, it was enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Over the past decades, Albaicín has evolved into a “hippie” zone of Granada, with many free-minded expats calling it home. You'll find various ateliers and schools of performing arts, along with some charming bars hosting occasional cultural events. I really enjoyed the vibe there.

Albaicín není žádná rozlhlá čvtrť, jak si asi tipnete při pohledu na jeho domečky a kostelíky. Ale od roku 1984 je na seznamu světových památek UNESCO. Během posledních několika desítek let se z téhle čtvrti stalo takové volnomyšlenkářské hippie centrum města. Přistěhovali se sem podobně smýšlející lidé z celého světa a uličky po večerech pulzují životem. Je tu spousta ateliérů, různých škol a školiček scénických umění nebo flamenca, a samozřejmě i spousta typických španělských barů, ve kterých se čas od času konají různé performance a vystoupení. Jo, líbilo se mi tady.

The dominant of Albaicín is the Mudéjar-style Church of Saint Nicolas, dating back to 1525. While it's not open to the public, reaching it is not a waste of time, as the small plaza in front of it offers astonishing views of the Alhambra. See for yourselves.

Kostel Sv. Mikuláše jen tak nepřehlédnete, Albaicínu není mnoho větších staveb. Byl postavený v mudejárském stylu v roce 1525 a bohužel není otevřený pro veřejnost. To vás ale mrzet nemusí, protože z náměstíčka před ním je nádherný výhled na Alhambru. Všimněte si zasněžených hor vlevo vzadu.

I’ve mentioned caves, and here they are – the Sacromonte caves. Just a few minutes' walk would take you to the area where real cavemen live. Yes, these caves have been inhabited for several centuries. Some are even rented out as Airbnb homes, while others serve as upscale flamenco clubs. Since we visited Granada off-season, the clubs were not open. But we’re definitely coming back, maybe for skiing next year (yes, you can ski in Andalucia), so we’ll have another chance to visit at least one of them.

Na začátku jsem zmínil jeskyně. Tak tady je máte, jako celku se jim říká Sacromonte (možná si vzpomenete na po jeskyních pojmenovaný pivovar, o kterém už jsem tu psal). Jsou jen pár minut cesty od kostela. Lidé je obývají už několik století. Některé z nich si můžete pronajmout na Airbnb, ale je to docela pálka. V jiných jsou prestižní flamencové hudební kluby. Mimo sezónu měly bohužel zavřeno, ale určitě se sem ještě vrátíme. Příští rok bychom si tu chtěli zalyžovat. Nedaleko je totiž super lyžařské středisko, kde se lyžuje v nějakých 3000 metrech nad mořem. Ale o tom třeba zase někdy příště.
