FASHION DESIGNING IS A SKILL HAS HELPED ME THUS FAR

Every human being has one skill they are either born with or get to learn at some point in their existence. Hence, the #hiveghana prompt is all about sharing the skill I have that I know I am excellent and can teacher that skill so well that my student will not only be good at it but would also earn a living from it. Because these day, people venture into businesses that would yield profits and sustain the family and needs in this economy.

The one skill that I am very good at is TAILORING also called FASHION DESIGNING. TAILORING is simply the act of making clothes by cutting,sewing,shaping and also fitting. For centuries now,fashion has been a trend that has existed and has been passed down from different generations. Also,over the years styles have gone complicated hence we see different styles every season. For instance,in the olden days in Nigeria, the common fashion styles were traditional wears like buba and iro, buba and soro and so on. In the western world just as it was depicted in the movie 'bridgerton' where the ladies sew their flowing gowns with a modiste , with the use of corsets and shapers.

One thing about fashion designing is that a style never fades away ,rather ideas are implemented and made to a style around. In our contemporary world now,the use of corsets in dresses in back and trending.

Although I learnt TAILORING but this was not after I had a fair knowledge of it from my mother. I watched her sew while growing up,so when I got into the university and a six month strike came up,I had to take up a course in it by going to a fashion school. I really couldn't learnt a lot from her as it was a side hustle. Since then, I learnt to make practically all kind of dresses from skirts, blouses, gowns, asoebi, trousers, shirts, and so on. Mastering the craft of sewing is not an easy feat because you can make mistakes from just the beginning.

This is why the basics of sewing is so necessary. Starting from choosing or selecting the kind of material that is suitable for the kind of style you want to make and also the yards. Sometimes a lace material is suitable for some styles and not suitable for others. After this ,we need to take accurate measurements, because a slip in measurements can lead to a disaster. Sometimes we may take measurements too big or too small, especially for trousers, once you miss the crotch area, it's also hard to correct it. Fitting and shapping are one aspects to show professionalism in being a fashion designer.

So far so good, fashion designing is one of trending business in Nigeria and if you know your onions you would excel at it. All these gown stars wear are locally crafted by our tailors. In one interview I heard when the popular veekee James said she never charges less that a million naira for her outfits. Since learning the skill ,it has helped to bring in money as a side hustle and also saved me from having to spend money in making my own clothes as I can make them. So yes,it is a worthy skill that is current,trendy, and people can make a good and honest living from it.
