LOH #159: CHRISTMAS FESTIVE PERIOD IS MY PREFERRED HOLIDAY OF THE YEAR
Happy Sunday everyone, it's another episode of the #ladiesofhive contest and this time I chose the second question as I would love to spill all about my your favorite holiday of the year, and why?. It almost the end of the year and everyone is trying to put things in place regardless of the situation at hand. By the situation, I mean the economy is really tough right now and everything has tripped in their price but we would not let this deterr us from having a wonderful time with friends and families. The season is meant to be celebrated and that we would accomplish.
So for me, my favorite holidays of the year is got to be the Christmas and the new year festive period. These two periods are the holidays we always look forward to in Nigeria, except for the minimal ones that just requires you to take a day off like schoolbreaks, Easter, children's day, national holidays and so on. But the Christmas and new year requires long holidays and the kids love it and always look forward to celebrating it. No doubt, as a child we always looked forward to this time, when we get to travel home, meet with families and distant friends.
One reason why I prefer the Christmas season holiday is because of what we call "the full household'. The full house simply means that everyone comes home during this period from wherever they are to celebrate. I remember when we were young, my family would all travel home and we would have a blast at grandma and grandpa's house. They would slaughter a goat, kill chicken, cook white rice and stew and buy bottles of coke, Fanta, and all sorts then. Back then, things were not as expen9as they are now. Looking back, I miss them. So much.
This period has a means of reconciling the family back together, it is this time the elders have what we call family meetings. Again, during this periods there are lots and lots of gifts. As each year pass by, you even get gifts from people you did not expect it from. Like 4years ago, we got a hamper from someone at church that claimed that he admired our family and wanted to gift us the little token. It was so heartwarming that day because there were lots and lots of goodies in them.
One of the best gifts I always look forward to during the holidays is the big fat chicken, also called broiler that our aunt always gifts us. I will check for the picture if I can still find it. Then at this time, my parents engage in what they call monthly contributions, so at the end of the year some group of people come together and buy a big cow to kill and share, from the money collected. This has been a tradition ever since I was little. It also comes with other packages such as groundnut oil, spices, rice, tomato paste and so on.
My mum has also made this period a time to give out to less privilege or the needy. We would wash our old clothes that has become too small for us, clean them and give them out to people it can fit. Other times it could be food items like rice, beans and garri.
Also, we look forward to making our hairs and loo as beautiful as we can. As we can see, there are lots and lots of activities during this period and this is why I always look forward to it. It affords me the opportunity to see my ever busy brother that only comes home ones a year.
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog...

No doubt about it. The best festive moments are when the whole family gets together and then you feel so happy and so at ease that your heart seems to burst out of your chest. By the way, they eat very well during their festivities. May the tradition continue to be preserved.
