BeerSaturday 378 - Stillwater Ancient Grain Sour Ale (Meinklang)

avatar

Here's my entry for BeerSaturday 378 with a Sure Ale made from organic ancient grains brewed by Meinklang in Austria. And yes, for once we're not in Quebec. A friend brought this beer home one evening, always cool to discover a new type of beer from another country.

So for this BeerSaturday, we're not going to use a map of Quebec, but rather of Europe, to locate this brewery and vineyard Meinklang in Austria on the border with Hungary.

Stillwater Ancient Grain Sour Ale** is a 5% alcohol Sour Ale brewed with organically grown ancient grains. The grains used are locally grown barley and wheat. In the glass, you'll find a beautiful, slightly cloudy orange-yellow color. This is topped by a thick white foam. But on the palate, the taste is quite unique, with a well-balanced bitterness. Really very good, I hope to find other beers from Meinklang near me.

Design

The design Meinklang is quite simple, with a cow logo on a gold background. Behind it are the ingredients and their provenance. Simple and effective...

Yep it's pretty rare to see Austrian beers on grocery store shelves in Montreal. I enjoyed this discovery 😀

I sampled some 3,000-years-old beer for this Beer Saturday, and I am quite glad we moved forward with brewing since that particular recipe was introduced. This one sounds way better though ;)

Oh I'll go read your post, quite curious to see that taste the recipe for beer 3000 years ago.

The sour presence in its name led me into thinking that it will have a sour taste but from your description, it has a smooth bitter taste in the palate too. That's incredible!!.

So, tell me, have you found any like it around you?

I didn't taste too much of the beer's sour flavour, only a slight bitterness. But I find that a tasting often depends on my state of mind, the same beer is appreciated differently if happy or not.
And I haven't yet found any other beers from this brewery, but I haven't yet been to my favourite beer merchant.

Have a lovey day

Man, this looks good! I have baked bread with various ancient grains, and I have to be honest that some of them make the best bread (especially sourdough). Spelt, which is readily available here, makes for the best sourdough bread in my opinion.

This beer looks really awesome! I would not mind sampling some of it. I wish we could have similar beers here in South Africa, but local farmers do not want to grow ancient grains, as it is not profitable for them. Such a shame.

Thanks for sharing a really interesting beer!
