The Reason Why and My Daily Task in Construction | #Construction Diary 001

Hello fellow builders, How are you? Hoping you are doing well today. I know this blog finds you odd in your feeds and It is not mostly the content I always shared with you and the type of community I always publish on.

20240828_152420.jpg

Maybe you are asking, is there a community like this?, alive? and functioning?

Yes! There is, but it is not as active as I wanted when I created this last September 2022. If you visit the community there are no activities or active users. I can't blame everyone for why this happened because even I as an admin was irresponsible of handling this community. I didn't even publish one blog after launching this community two years ago. What should I expect, right?

What Happened?

At that time Im very enthusiastic to share with you my Construction life and Journey. Im a newbie in construction and have a lot of vision I want to do. Im eager to learn new methods and construction knowledge and I also want to share it with you here on the platform.

20240828_100124.jpg

But, this burning fire in me is starting to fade along the way, and sometimes Im feel empty while working in this industry. What I mean is, I asked myself if I have a future in this world of construction. Questioning myself about what I was doing and what I really wanted.

It was a blank page that I didn't know how to answer it. The thing that I loved and dreamed of before is now I despise (not thoroughly). It is at this stage that I want to give up and detour to another path that can satisfy what I want.

Most things never go as I wanted and my expectations of working in construction have never been hit yet. This is one of the reasons why my fire is getting smaller.

20240828_102450.jpg

The workloads are manageable and the people around are remarkably good. Everyone has an edge and talent to overcome construction challenges. We know Construction is one of the most stressful and challenging workplaces. A lot of problems and technical solutions are needed to overcome the challenge. It needs a lot of effort, dedication, and talent to make you succeed.

One thing I want to point out on this is the effort we wanted is not maximized to its fullest potential. From the unequal compensation to low technologies and slow innovation available in the country for Construction. I hate to say this, but we are far behind. It is frustrating and this frustration swallows me slowly.

Overthinking!

Lately, I realized it is the one that makes me weaker and makes fire die, yes I overthink and have problems with this. Thinking too much about the future kills my time and lose the present situation. I don't know if everyone walking in this situation. I'm hoping we overcome this at our own pace.

20240828_100312.jpg

My rationale is a bit lengthy and I think you deserved to know. And now, for the context of this blog. I will share with you my daily duties and responsibilities as a Civil Engineer.

Overview :

To inform everyone, I'm working in the construction industry under a corporate company. Currently, I'm a Quality Assurance and Control Inspector in a Housing project. For this blog, I will insight into some of my daily tasks and share some technical information about the Construction I faced last August 28, 2024.

20240828_152448.jpg

It was a gloomy day and the construction activities are still ongoing. It is a normal day,we have a bunch of scheduled inspections and Testing to be conducted onsite.

Sanitary Line Flow test

The first schedule in the morning is the Sanitary line Flow test. This time we will test the installed sanitary pipe from the water closet to Septic Tank if it is in 2% standard slope requirements.

20240828_102502.jpg

Process

On this test, we need a ping pong ball and we will put it on the determined sanitary line provision to be tested and then pour a pell of water gradually. Our goal is to make the ping-pong ball come out in the Septic Tank through gravity, but on this part, you need also to observe the flow rate and the time when the ping-pong ball came out.

If the flow rate is too slow and the ball game is out too long, There is a possibility that the pipe is clogged, and installation needs to be rechecked.

Importance of Sanitary line Flow test

This testing is one of the important practices you need to conduct in construction. It will prevent the blockage and unexpected overflow of your sanitary line system. It can also detect leaks and damages that can cost you money on repairs in the future. By having this we can ensure the lifespan of our sanitary line and the waste disposal is safely transported to the sewer system without causing a crucial effect on our health.

Out of six units scheduled for the Sanitary line, only two had passed and were ready for the next activity. The other for need to re-inpect and identify the cause of the problem.

Precast Inspection

20240828_103216.jpg

The next Inspection in the morning is precast, this time I visited the precast yard of our contractor. For this Inspection I will check the quality of the Wall panel, beams, and slab before transporting it to the site for erection. I should check if it is in the right dimensions, no defects such as cracks, dents, and unaligned corners.

20240828_103132.jpg

For everyone who didn't know about precast, Precast is a concrete component manufactured in a safe area like this yard and then transported to the site for assembly. Precast is like a Lego toy where we have blocks and then build something out of it like a house and other infrastructure. They are constructed in a modular way to make the house construction fast and efficient.

The inspection endeed by before lunch and so far all panels inspected are made in quality and according to plan.

Compression Test

In the afternoon, I witnessed a compression test for our concrete samples from our ready-mix concrete supplier. Testing is conducted in an accredited Testing Material Center. It is just 15 minutes away from the site and glad no other clients are lined up for testing that we finish it early.

By the way, Concrete Compression Test is a procedure to determine the compressive strength of the concrete. A compressive force is applied to a sample it is usually a box or a cylindrical shape until it breaks and fails. It is to determine the maximum strength of the concrete in a certain period of days. This withstands strength is the indicator of the quality and durability of the concrete. It is also one way to determine if the concrete is based on the strength design.

20240828_141411.jpg

The testing of compression in a certain concrete involves time intervals. 7 days and 14 days for early detection if it attains the strength percentage at this certain time. The last one is 28 days, in this period if the sample aged at 28 Days, it will attain its maximum strength and it is the final data we need to conclude the strength of the concrete we cast on site.

20240828_144127.jpg

Having this testing on your construction can give you assurance of structural stability and quality of concrete. It will give you peace as well that the structure you made can withstand any structural challenges such as calamities.

20240828_141223.jpg

So far on this batch of concrete samples, all have passed and attained the required strength.

Formworks Inspection

For the Last Inspection of the day, I inspected the upstanding wall prior pouring. On this time I will secure the alignment of the formwork and its squareness. On this inspection also we need to check its setting out and offset of its property if it is still base on approved layout.

The importance of this inspection is we ensure that the casted structure is aligned and finished cleaned that the precast will be fit out properly. This structure is cast in place and serve of as the base of the precast panels.

This is type of content that I enjoy the most. I hope we get a lot more PH authors to share about their line of expertise. It is a great opportunity for learning. Thanks for sharing.

Most of the people I know who are in the construction industry eventually went their way to build their own firms. Keep the fire burning!

WOW!! I learned so much about your work intoy!
Actually it's very incredible! And very interesting!
I hope you will share more of your construction journey with us.
And don't overthink too much. I think it's natural for us that burning fire will slowly fade, but don't let it be completely gone. Ups and downs of life ba. I'm sure there will come a time that you will be passionate again.

woah I didn't know that you were a civil engineer. that makes me excited tbh haha. I am actually studying wind load analysis again for our subject in steel.

image.png

i am also doing my assignment as of writing lol. i am now enhancing my skills in creating and reading floor plans as i suck in design.

i hope you will create more content about construction.

I just keep it in my pocket being an engineer here hahaha. This Steel framing reminds me of those days and our theory of structures. Analyzing Windloads in every part of the trusses is a bit tricky but It will be fun when you find its forces and reactions correctly.

Analyzing Windloads in every part of the trusses is a bit tricky

haha yep, it's also a bit confusing since you have a lot of things to consider.
