Saludos amantes del cine, si de actores polifacéticos hablamos nadie puede dudar que Johnny Depp es uno de los más sobresalientes en los últimas décadas, muchos lo recuerdan por sus personajes en donde tenía un traje o maquillaje emblemático, por decirlo de algún modo por los disfraces que ha usado en diferentes filmes, que van de la mano con su aura siempre un poco excéntrica, sin embargo, aunque ha participado en muchas películas de uno de mis directores favoritos Tim Burton, mi película favorita de este actor es muy diferente, se trata de ¿A quién ama Gilbert Grape? Dirigida por Lasse Hallström en 1993.

Many remember him for his characters where he had an emblematic suit or makeup, so to speak because of the costumes. which he has used in different films, which go hand in hand with his always a bit eccentric aura, however, although he has participated in many films by one of my favorite directors Tim Burton, my favorite film by this actor is very different, it is about from What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Directed by Lasse Hallström in 1993.

En esta película Depp interpreta a un joven que trabaja en un supermercado de un pequeño pueblo, vive con su madre quien tiene obesidad y nunca sale de casa, su hermana mayor quien se ocupa sobre todo de cuidar a la madre y la casa, su hermana adolescente y su hermano que es discapacitado mental y por quien guarda mucho cariño.

In this film Depp plays a young man who works in a supermarket in a small town, he lives with his mother who is obese and never leaves the house, his older sister who is mainly responsible for taking care of the mother and the house, his sister teenager and his brother who is mentally disabled and for whom he is very fond.

Su padre murió hace muchos años por lo cual su madre cayó en depresión y derivó en su enfermedad de obesidad, así que a Gilbert le toca el rol de ser el hombre de la casa, se puede decir que tiene una vida monótona pero nada fácil, pues debió asumir responsabilidades a corta edad y se mantiene como el pilar de la casa, tratando de controlar a su hermano quien en muchas ocasiones se escapa de la casa y se trepa en lugares altos, su hermana mayor trata de ayudar todo lo que puede, pero es una dinámica familiar que implica que él junto a su hermana se hagan cargo de su madre y hermano dejando de lado sus propias vidas.

Las perspectivas de Gilbert cambian cuando conoce a una chica que viaja en caravana con su abuela, el se enamora pero existe en él un conflicto interno pues siente que no puede dejar de lado las responsabilidades con su familia, esto es algo que me parece que es un tema importante porque en muchas familias la regla general es que los padres cuiden a sus hijos hasta que estos tomen su camino personal e independiente, pero en casos de familias disfuncionales con problemas psicológicos y salud, los hijos son los que termina cuidando a sus padres y esta película es un reflejo de esa otra realidad que viven muchas personas.

Gilbert’s perspectives change when he meets a girl who is traveling in a caravan with her grandmother. He falls in love but there is an internal conflict in him because he feels that he cannot leave aside his responsibilities with his family. This is something that seems to me to be an important issue because in many families the general rule is that parents take care of their children until they take their personal and independent path, but in cases of dysfunctional families with psychological and health problems, the children are the ones who end up taking care of their parents. And this film is a reflection of that other reality that many people live.

Esta película es maravillosa porque trata de forma respetuosa y con tacto un tema que es bastante crudo, por lo que incluso algunas situación que podría resultar incomoda y que en la realidad harían voltear la mirada a otro lado a la gente, son retrasadas en esta película de forma muy realista, por ejemplo, que pasa cuando una persona con discapacidad mental tiene una crisis y su familia no sabe como reaccionar o que pasa cuando muere la madre de un una persona con dicha condición, es algo que es vigente y un tema muy difícil de hacer ver en una película sin caer en dramatismo exagerados, esta película hace un enfoque excelente de la situación y la recomiendo.

This film is wonderful because it respectfully and tactfully deals with a topic that is quite crude, so even some situations that could be uncomfortable and that in reality would make people look away, are delayed in this film. In a very realistic way, for example, what happens when a person with a mental disability has a crisis and their family does not know how to react or what happens when the mother of a person with said condition dies, it is something that is current and a very topic. Difficult to make in a movie without falling into exaggerated drama, this movie makes an excellent approach to the situation and I recommend it.
