Reflection that has sunk into oblivion | Reflection Hunters Contest ~ Round 160
Hello, friends.
Last May, while walking around the city of Kaliningrad, I took several photographs of the building of the House of Soviets, not yet knowing that these photographs already belong to history.
Since also in May last year, a decision was made to demolish this building. In the fall, builders began dismantling the building. I asked my son to take a photograph of the current state of the House of Soviets. Today the building looks like this:
But let's go back in time and get acquainted with the history of this building...
At the end of the Second World War, the Royal Castle located on this site was severely destroyed.
Photo of the Royal Castle, May 1967, the author of the photo is unknown.
In 1970, it was decided to dismantle the Royal Castle and construction of the House of Soviets began in its place. Construction was carried out very slowly and when the building was ready for interior decoration, the USSR entered a crisis and then ceased to exist. Over the past thirty years, projects on how to use the building periodically arose, but all of them were not implemented, and the building deteriorated and collapsed.
In May 2023, a decision was made to dismantle the building. But what will take its place is still a debatable question. Architects and the region's leadership are considering different options, from restoring the Royal Castle to establishing a park, but no consensus has yet been formed.
In the meantime, May 2023 again, view of the Pregolya River, Fishing Village and the building of the House of Soviets doomed to demolition
