QC Community Contest #130- Being Famous vs Being Popular
Greetings everyone. Trust you all are doing great.
Growing up I used to think being famous and being popular mean the same thing considering how it's been used in mass media, social media and even among some educators and people in the society. My curiosity made me went further to do some research to actually clear my doubts and to be knowledgeable on how and when to properly use both words for proper understanding. Getting a notification concerning the current Queer Contest, after going through the question , I smiled within me knowing all things happens but for a purpose.
FAME: Is there a difference between being popular and being famous? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of being famous? When would you consider someone or something as famous?
Difference between being famous and being popular
When we talk about being famous it means someone or something is well known by a lot of people be it in a particular setting, school, church, large organizations, community or even globally. This could be for either good or bad reasons.. While being popular on the other hand means someone or something that is generally accepted, mostly loved or liked. Given the difference, it shows that while someone/thing may be famous, it does not mean it is popular and while it may be popular, it does not mean it is famous. On the other hand, someone or something may be famous and still be popular. For instance, the president of my country Nigeria is famous especially in the country for high cost of living but that does not necessarily mean he is popular, that is; loved by the people. Again, pizza is famous and popular too. A lot of people or things fall into the category of Fame and popularity like celebrities, politicians, clergymen, school heads, etc.
Advantages of being famous
Being famous goes with some advantages such as;
Gains preferencial treatment
Attracts so many friends
Being easily identified in any social gathering
Stands the chance to be favoured when some life changing opportunities occur
Disadvantages of being famous
The following are sone of the disadvantages of being famous;
Does not move freely in public just like every normal person
Attracts a lot of unreal friends
Mostly do not have privacy in terms of their personal lives
Are mostly perceived as lacking nothing when in actual sense may be in dial need of something
When someone or something is considered as famous
Someone or something could be considered as famous when they go viral or are in everyone's lips, all over the media both mass and social. For instance, a couple of weeks ago a particular news went viral over the social media of a young lady who bought a Lambo. The news went viral not just because she bought a Lambo but because according to people who claimed they know her, that her source of income could not be traced as to being able to buying such luxury car. Another instance that could be considered as being famous is a student who is from a low background and participated in a global mathematics competition and fortunately won. Such news will go viral thereby making the student famous because there might be numerous benefits that follow the win and the news will be most talked about across the globe.
Conclusion
Fame has it's pros and cons but the ability to manage both wisely makes it different. Someone or something may be famous but not necessarily popular, and one may be famous and still be popular. On the other hand, one may be popular and may not be famous too.

You have made the point to stand out, being famous is better than being popular.
This is such a great point. Somehow, most of us have learned that fame solves people's lives, and even now I am surprised when I hear stories of famous people who even have financial problems to the point of having to sell their properties.
