Blown Away By Colour
When Bigger Picture Holds You Spellbound
When movement happens in a tree, you not sure what you looking at, try utmost hone in on your skills, zoom is required. Flaming movement, sit still I need better look, ready aim click still not totally sure what you capturing on other end of lens.
First sighting only one photo good enough when uploaded to the computer, now I could see you not a regular! Out comes the books to research, yes old fashioned I love opening a book playing the guessing game...
Although we don't see many pigeons, especially cities referring them to flying rats the last thing on my mind was a pigeon, we have many doves.
African Green Pigeon (Treron calvus) has what appears to be the cutest yellow 'leg-ins' with bright pink/red beak and feet. Green plumage makes for great camouflage the ones I saw with bright blue eyes.
Could not contain my excitement when I first saw the bird albeit a difficult photo to capture, a couple of months later I saw them again this time further distance sitting on top of a tree, talk about excitement levels when we witness a new bird in town.

A plump pigeon with green wings and back, dull burgundy shoulders, and a whitish bill with a red base. It prefers forest and thicker woodland, where nomadic groups congregate in fruiting trees, especially figs. They clamber around clumsily like parrots but can remain well hidden. When disturbed, they explode from a tree and fly quickly and directly. Often detected by their amusing song, which includes whinnies, clicks, whistles, cackles, and growls.
Look forward to seeing them again hopefully better sightings knowing more about their love of ripe fig trees and how fast the move around, will be on the look-out. Another intelligent bird, as are many pigeons have excellent sight and hearing, delighted to see.

Lol, even the pigeons there are amazing. Ours truly do look ratlike. Bedraggled half-limbed things!
Large cities we travelled through I recall seeing special netting used to keep the pigeons out, mid 70s. Then reading of a Harris Hawk being used in London to chase the pigeons and sea gulls... Yikes makes you understand there is an over-population problem.
Defo, We have that netting all over the place yet it is still a brave person that parks their car under a bridge! :OD
Free spray paint! Never say nothing comes for free
Some free stuff ain't worth it 🤣🤣

The green color of the lower part of the pigeon blends with the leaves of the tree and it looks as if the pigeon is not sitting on a tree but is growing on it.😄 It's lovely!🐦⬛
Sending Love and Ecency Vote!
Sure blends in, makes one doubt you actually photographing anything.

Wonderful post as always. Thank you again.
Hi lady @joanstewart good day
This find is incredible, great that you saw it for the first time, I had never seen a green pigeon before
Green Pigeons - "The African Green Pigeon (Treron calvus) is a species of bird in the Columbidae family, and one of 5 Green Pigeon species in the Afrotropics. As with others in their genus, they frequent tree canopies where their parrot-like climbing ability enable them to reach fruit, but rarely also forage on the ground. The species has a wide range in Sub-Saharan Africa with around 17 accepted races."
I learned more about this fascinating bird at the time I started seeing it.

Super beautiful green color, a dull green kind. Hopefully it visits again so you can get a better shooting 📷 position.

Apparently they seldom come down from tree tops, was looking at a wildlife birding safari up in uMkhuzi reserve, North of us where one came down to drink at the river, fascinating leg covers in bright yellow!

Good morning dear friend @joanstewart
It is wonderful that on two occasions you have been able to enjoy the presence of this beautiful and peculiar pigeon
Thank you very much for letting us know about this beauty
I am more alert to where they may be now than previously after researching, who knows I may get lucky as they appear apparently any time of the year, breed more in the summer months.
As they say variety is the spice of life, this green pigeon looks really lovely, and you did a wonderful job capturing it it's element.
Thanks for visit and kind words, have a lovely day and enjoy bird watching.
You're welcome, also do have a lovely day and week.
Thanks 🤗
I always learn something from your posts, @joanstewart! I did not know “flying rats” were intelligent birds! I love pigeons and doves. I find their cooing to be soothing!
We have two species of doves visit regularly both lovely cooing. Term with pigeons learned when travelling to Europe, expression used on asking about netting at all the large older buildings.
