Plus One Kite

Taking It All In

Adding plus one to your life, one is forever grateful to be able to witness new every day in something happening in nature.

Yellow-billed Kite - Milvus aegyptius was my present today, you know when you walk you look into the bush or trees, I mean look, slightest movement catches your eye, across a garden into neighbours tree another house away it was happening in the big tree.

IMG_6489.JPG

How I jeered and cheered a couple of months ago, too big to simply cut down (as is happening too often of late), this tree stood tall and proud. This morning gave me my first glimpse of this majestic bird enjoying its snack obviously sneaked off from a raw meat platter in somebody's garden waiting to go onto the fire.

IMG_6492.JPG

We had a family braai (BBQ with wood) yesterday, ever so tasty! Perhaps between August to May when this bird visits I should start putting some chicken necks out for them to enjoy a morsel, I have seen them lift frogs from roads being road-kill or smaller birds, never seen one enjoying it's snack before.

IMG_6495.JPG

Here was my experience, not close, close enough to zoom in and manage a few captures that did not take to ripping the flesh in total contentment.

IMG_6494.JPG

Might have been a piece of meat put out for a pet in a garden these opportunistic birds will scavenge or take fresh. An intra-African migratory bird of prey that breeds in tall trees which I have yet to find. Sticks and man-made soft materials are used in nesting material by the monogamous and territorial bird.

IMG_6495.JPG

All in all a great day happy and content in nature with with feathered friends showcasing their achievement in looking after themselves without needing human assistance most times.

Great shots!

without needing human assistance

Government free, too. We could do that. Operate on nature's principles.

Very excited in seeing this, one often sees them in great numbers swooping down to pick up off the ground, never seen one settle into a tree to enjoy.

I spent about half an hour watching, enjoyed it's meal as I stumbled around trying to focus to get the best I was able.

What a brilliant find! I know what you mean by looking for slightest movement in the trees and bushes, that is how I found so many interesting birds. Great start for this round thanks to your wonderful entry.🙂

Scanning around within the leaves this guy was well hidden between two large branches a bit of a pain to line up to obtain some photos. All good in a morning out!

Always so nice to catch them eating and I always enjoy to watch those kinds of shots.

Glad that you and Woody could go and destress awhile in nature!

Walk always enjoyable, simply an hour out of the house does wonders, how sad life is that you cannot move around!

One hour is more than enough, as it's really invigorating. So many never move around, and when they do, then most of them are staring, or typing on their phones.

People have lost the art of enjoying being out watching life!

You can say that again, and nowadays when they one walking around and takings photos, some of them are so self important that they ask me to not take any photos of them. Imagine their faces when I show them the bird that I was taking a photo of.

Got a delicious lunch. He probably rarely eats such quality food. The kites that live in my region are usually scavengers and prefer to eat scraps.

I have a feeling he stole this from a dog bowl or from someone preparing meat outdoors for a braai, he scored well here!

I wonder where he sneak out that piece of meat but it's so cute..I have not seen in person a bird eating a meat yet. I wonder if this one is a predator of all animals around the surroundings.

We have a few predator birds around, it's a first for me to see one enjoying it's meal wherever he found it, looks content!

Birds of prey are strong, free, imposing in the sky and I love them.

What nice pictures you took of the moment of their refreshment. It looks beautiful.

Thank you @joanstewart for sharing the pictures and information about this bird.

Relatively large kite, we see them often flying around, this was a wonderful moment to watch him feeding at a distance.

That was a super lucky day and meal for the bird, probably such a meal doesn't come often.

Ya had me going there Joanie, with your title. I thought "Well goodness sake, she done got herself a new boyfriend/girlfriend/partner" (the plus one ha ha)

I have a family of "Fowlers Hawks" nesting somewhere close by, there are usually at least 3 individuals cruising the skies over my property.
I love it but at the same time I am afraid for His Majesty, as my cat would make several meals for one of them.

Nothing extra here...., ever need to downsize !LOLZ

One does need to keep an eye out for eagles, hawks or kites with small pets, have had some go missing with Crown Eagles in our neighbourhood, although they do prefer monkeys which are a plenty!

There are squirrels and chipmunks aplenty here, but methinks they don't make much of a meal for the hawks.
We also have OWLS which makes me pleased His Majesty spends the night in bed with me most of the time... after about 10 PM that is.

His Majesty has nine lives, one will never know how many have been used already 🙃
