Trilling Cackling Feeding Time

African Firefinch And Green Wood-Hoopoe

Introducing the small feeder then a larger friend to my kingdom of birds over the last week, many come and go these two were the featured birds I selected due to exclusive secrecy or allusiveness in front of a camera being fast movers and shakers.

African Firefinch (Lagonosticta rubricata) they are back, exciting to see this small waxbill in the garden again. Males have more brilliant red than the female, both extremely attractive little birds.

IMG_3904.JPG

Short low trill of a call between them one has to be more observant, watching out for them on the feeder.

IMG_5034.JPG

Secretive 10 cm birds African Firefinch one sudden move they disappear into the low hanging bush I have allowed to grow for smaller birds, protection when coming in to feed is a must to attract the little ones.

IMG_5038.JPG

Green wood-hoopoe, was known as Red-billed wood-hoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureu) a robust, gregarious bird arriving to into the garden with loud cackling sound as they busy themselves in the tree.

IMG_5322.JPG

Eating a great variety these 35 - 42 cm long birds we see when they allow you or visit your garden with possible insects or larvae in dead branch, using the tail to anchor them down in quick hops.

IMG_5318.JPG

First up a berry, then open your beak and enjoy an insect simply fly directly in for brunch, why not said the Green wood-hoopoe?

IMG_5321.JPG

Going around the old branch they poke behind loose bark and inside crevices for insects, known to eat small reptiles or amphibians, snack on nectar, seeds and fruits. The crazy cackling sound maniacal when they arrive you know they are close communicating with each other.

Shame, it probably might be a hot summer, as for the Northern Cape that place gets really hot and also gets very cold in winter, I was in Kakamas, Upingtion, and other places in winter, and it was freezing.

Oldest brother lived in Poffadder on mines close to Upington, extreme weather up there for sure.

I think is that maniacal cackle of them communicating to each other that would make African parents begin the whole tirade of possibly possessed birds and the like.😆

Very pretty birds.🌺

The name for the Green Wood-Hoopoe in Afrikaans – Rooibekkakelaar – literally means red-beaked cackler, and one of its Zulu names – iNhlekabafazi – means the laughter of women, rather unflatteringly likening the laughing of women to raucous cackling! Nature Back In

The Zulu name describes it well!

Such a wonderful feast! I loved the metaphor someone long ago told me, trees are basically large bird feeders. Stunning photographs! Thank you for sharing.

I think I remember this green wood hoopoe from some cartoon (I am unsuccessful in remembering) where this bird carries some berries in the beek and drops those somewhere.
But the first one African firefinch is having more beautiful looks.

You must have the patience of a saint, otherwise, how the heck do you get some of the remarkable pictures that you capture?
The photos of the Green wood-hoopoe are remarkable, especially the one with the insect flying right by the bird's bill. How the heck did you even see that never mind getting a picture of it?

Have a wonderful day and enjoy the upcoming weekend, my friend.

I never was and probably never will be a bird watcher, but there are a lot of interesting birds in the world, that's for sure. I've never seen or heard of any of the ones here.
