Devotion to the Nazarene, as a sculptural representation of the figure of Jesus of Nazareth (hence the word) on the “Way of the Cross” (road to Calvary), is deeply rooted in Latin America and Spain. The cross-bearing Christ in a purple (or scarlet) robe is an emblematic image of the Christian faith expressed during Holy Week.

El Cristo con la cruz a cuestas con túnica morada (o escarlata) es una imagen emblemática de la fe cristiana expresada en Semana Santa.
En Venezuela se arraigó desde tiempos coloniales, y su culto, que se realiza el Miércoles Santo, alcanza una expresión mayor en el Nazareno de San Pablo, que es llevado en procesión por calles del centro de Caracas. Igualmente sucede en otros lugares de Venezuela. Particularmente, en Cumaná (Estado Sucre), la procesión del Nazareno de la hoy Basílica Menor de Santa Inés es una tradición de muchos años, que permanece. A ella asiste gran parte de la colectividad cumanesa, destacando los penitentes con atavíos de color morado o violeta. Mis fotos muestran ese culto, tomadas el día de ayer (16 de abril de 2025).
