New Years Eve Holiday Selfie | A Mixed Media Art Project

Who doesn't love taking selfies? It's a favorite past time in the online social media realm. Basically, taking selfies of yourself during various times can be seen purely as self-gratifying or promoting yourself.

A person may want to showcase apparel, makeup appearance or design, costumes, or highlight an important activity occurring during the time of the photo. I know many individuals like to take selfies when they visit a new restaurant and showcase the menu, decor with indoor and outdoor, and them themselves and others eating the various foods.

Not only that, an individual may want to highlight where that person may physically be at a particular location or entertaining another party. What better proof the event actually happened than to prove a point or verify the situation. Having evidence may be the underlying motive.

But what if individuals just desire to have fun and be seen having fun. In that case, they can capture the moment during an activity, then share it. Just showing someone a photo of an event isn't the same as seeing yourself in the mix engaging with others or just by yourself provides the person viewing the photo a sense of what was happening when the photo was taken.

However, according to psychologists, a variety of different and deeper reasons exists for the behavior. One such reason is to create the impression of intimacy.

Another reason is to interject a deeper meaning into the photo and give it a life of its own.

Still another is to record and chronicle life experiences during a given period of time in order to preserve the memories. Your memory will eventually fade as you age. Hopefully, the photos and selfies will remain for a period.

Many of my family and friends ask, "what did you do in the 90s?"

My usual response is, "I can't tell you specificially. A variety of things."

"Do you have pictures?"

"Of course."

They look at the photos and not one of them contains my image. Why? because I'm the one usually taking the photos. Another reason is I don't like selfies. I'm probably in a minority group on that issue.

My family has access to a sporting event. While there, instead of watching the play on the field, you can catch numerous people taking selfies then immediately post them to their social media page.

I do admit that I once attempted to take a selfie. My thumb print loomed large in the image. My face looked like a gigantic blob. I never attempted it again. I understand they do have gadgets that allow you to move the mobile phone a distance away and is held in place with a stick.

Too much work in my opinion.

The last reason I've heard the reason people take selfies is due to self-admiration or attempt to improve their self image. Now, this reason I'll never understand. However, I've seen it play out in real life and online, even on the blockchain.

But no matter what I think, people will continue to take selfies and present them to the world.
