The Cost of Unsolicited Advice | Freewrite: 10/4/24 | Prompt: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words
Source provided by FreeWriteHouse...
I've always lived my life with the notion based on the old saying I heard as a child. "Mother knows best". At least during my lifetime, this saying has ringed true on countless occasions. The picture prompt reminds me of numerous incidents as a young child and teen. I remember my mother who taught us lessons by way of parables and one liners. We got the message after not listening to this wise woman who we thought didn't know anything about what were were experiencing. Sometimes, we forget parents were once children.
Not to leave out fatherly advice, but sometimes men know a thing or too about certain things. Therein lies the wisdom of advice this father attempted to impart to his son, having a bit of knowledge about cars and their operation.
As the picture prompt reveals, Kenji, a 17-year old teen, nicely dressed with an otherwise pleasant attitude, that day leaned against the borrowed car he'd promised to enthusiastically take care of when his father handed him the keys.
"With these keys comes responsibility, son, as I've reiterated for the past two years. You now know what to do. I trust you'll care for our family asset." Mr. Chen turned to his wife and nodded, satisfied he'd completed his task as a dutiful father.
Tuning out the ten point maintenance tips given one final time, Kenji's mind and heart could only connect to Hana's lovely porcelain face and perfumed strands that cupped her face and fell past her shoulders. Then thoughts turned to his good fortune provided as the opportunity arose to drive her around the city as she would attend the same university.
That was six months ago when he departed his hometown for the nearest university. Desiring to house on campus, he was excited for the Fall semester to get underway. Of his group of friends, he was the only student fortunate enough to have vehicle transportation. He quickly became popular the first few months after arrival.
Studies and after school party activities occupied the majority of Kenji's time. In between, much needed rest took care of the remainder.
Heading out one morning, he frowned when the Check Engine light suddenly glowed solid. He didn't remember seeing it on previous occasions.
Instantly, the car stopped. It just shut off without him doing anything to assist the odd behavior. Attempting to crank the motor several times proved useless, so he exited. Ruling out an empty fuel tank, he opened the hood, but couldn't detect the problem.
Kenji pushed his hair back from his forehead, then held it in place for a few seconds as if the gesture would provide guidance. Immediately, drizzling rain caught him off guard. He closed the hood, rushed back to the car to retrieve an umbrella, and returned.
He shifted his foot from one to the other before finally leaning back against the car. What to do next? he pondered. No funds for a tow. No contact information for a tow company. And I can't leave the car in the middle of the street.
Staring mindlessly in the now pouring rain, he finally remembered he'd be late for a class with an assignment deadline that day. None of his friends answered his messages.
Why me? Kenji shouted glancing upward as rain steadily pounded his umbrella. A myriad of verdicts floated through his thoughts as he imagined his vehicle privileges fading.
Kenji made a quiet sound of helplessness. But he couldn't wait any longer. Staring at his dad's name in his contacts, several long moments passed. Pressing the button on his mobile phone was the hardest thing so far he'd done in his life.
A stab of guilt coursed through his body as his voice was thick and unsteady attempting to explain.
His dad's soft voice replied, "Don't worry. Where are you? I'll be there as quickly as I can."
Welcome back to my freewrite prompt story for this week. The photo that is the subject of the story spoke to me about a person who appears to be a young adult:
Describe what you see.
A well-dressed young man stands in front of a car on a street. Rain is pouring down with dark skies overhead.
Describe what you feel.
The young man is in a predicament. Perhaps the car has stalled, and he's waiting for help to arrive.
Write a story or poem about what you think is going on. I leave with you my story for: A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 10/4/24.

Anyone would think that he had a bit of bad luck, his friends do not answer, and the tow truck does not arrive, now he just has to wait for his father as a good man to come to the rescue.
Young people don't understand it, but parents will always be willing to help them to the best of our ability.

Aptly and truly stated @lanzjoseg. As a teen, I didn't understand that my parents were only looking out for my best interest when they were imparting advice. And the majority of the time, when no you have no one else to turn to, they will be there to assist if it's in their ability to do so.
I appreciate your visit and lovely words on behalf of parents. It would be an amazing feat if young people could have a look just for a moment at the other side of their life to get a glimpse of the role parents filled that they didn't want to listen.
Thanks for your support. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

Hello @hispapro. I appreciate your visit and manual curation of my freewrite PIC1000 Challenge story. Thanks for your support of the Community.
Reading through this story lines reminds me of my childhood days, I always felt my parents don't understand how their children wants to live not knowing they were once at that stage of life.
I'm sorry for Kenji, at times challenges come to us face to face and we don't know the cause of how to solve them.
Nice story indeed.
Thanks for sharing.
Usually it's the case of coming face to face with reality when we refuse to listen to advice, then remember that advice later when it too late. One may be embarrassed or feel guilty for not listening, but that person knows that one or the other parent will come to the rescue.
I appreciate your visit and view of my story. I was hoping it would be relatable. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

How amazing how we all give a different interpretation to the image 🤗. I enjoyed reading you, you write very well and kept me interested until the end @justclickindiva. Definitely, not following our parents' advice is something we all do in early youth, we always make that mistake until we grow up and realize how valuable that advice is. Greetings 🤗.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could take a glimpse into the other side on an issue to see whether we're making the right choice not following advice? I know it would have helped me in my "know it all" attitude and decisions as a teen.
Yes, their advice can be invaluable. When I think of my children, I have to smile when a situation arises as I remember the grief I gave my parents. I feel that my parenting evolved as a result of this, as I'm more willing to listen to their point of view and realize that there is more than one way to address and solve an issue.
Thanks so much for visiting. I appreciate your thoughtful analysis and engagement. Take care and have an awesome rest of your week.

This story made made understand the impact of parenting in our lives ..lovely story
Yes @giftedone. Parenting is one of the most important processes one can weave their way through in guiding children through the perilous years into adulthood. But like all children, they tend to feel that they know more than parents in the generation they grow up in. I know I certainly did.
I appreciate your visit and lovely compliment for my story. I'm pleased you connected with it. Take care.

I love that we almost all assumed that the boy's surname was of Asian origin, good literary cadence congratulations
Normally, I assign names based on the facial features in the image I'm working with. I infuse given and surnames to mostly American culture in the majority of my fiction writing since I'm in the U.S.
To be able to branch out and explore is a good thing. I appreciate you stopping by and viewing my story. I'm pleased you found it interesting. Take care and have a wonderful rest of your week.

Parents will always be parents, the love they have for their children always surpasses whatever crime a child committed, like you rightly said, we always forget that they where once children and they have parents so they know what will be best for us then children, no matter my age my parents have been in same age before.
That is so true @beauty197 that parents will always be parents with the knowledge they bring to any situation. Their approach is from a place of love and guidance knowing the pitfalls ahead.
I appreciate you stopping by and reading my story. I'm pleased that it resonated with your views. Take care and stay safe.

yea and they will never want any of their children to be in trouble
Absolutely true. Parents pray for their children's health and safety at all times.
So beautiful her dad!👏👏👏
Yes, his dad is a wonderful father.
A very wonderful interpretation to this image, the young lad must have learnt a thing or two, when his car broke down in the rain.
I sure hope so @jemima2001. Since he didn't want to listen when the advice was first given to him. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Take care.
It's such a huge responsibility vested on parents, once a parent, you will remain so through life.
Kenji's father has shown an exemplary role of a father, who would always be there for his child.
A beautiful interpretation indeed.
Yes, it is a tremendous responsibility @edith-4angelseu taking on the role as a parent. We already know based on our own experiences that a child won't listen sometimes and attempt to go their own way. Our role is to be there with love and without judgment when the situation arises.
Thanks so much for your visit and kind words for my story. I appreciate it. Take care and have a good rest of your week.
