On a Saturday morning, residents scurried indoors. Curtains were drawn, windows closed, and doors were locked on that otherwise peaceful Tranquility Lake Boulevard as neighbors waited for word whether the situation in the cul-de-sac at Thomas' home had been resolved.

Thomas stood silent, watching his older brother while contemplating his next move.

Jasper dug his hand deep as if searching for a pocketful of rage to hurl at his brother. The voices Jasper heard were his new best friends. And they made perfect sense in his reasoning. One voice in particular beckoned him to venture into yet unexplored territory. And his trust was steadfast. So he couldn't understand the urgency in his younger brother's entreaty to stand down, relax, and rethink his options.

"I don't get second chances. I can't work as quickly as others or under pressure. No one understands," Jasper blurted with spittle flying whenever questioned.

And today was no different.

Jasper stared wild eyed scratching his arms. Red whelps rose up as he rubbed harder. The enemy was attacking on all fronts. And no one rushed to his aid, he reasoned. Then, he uttered his discomfort.

Thomas immediately issued a rebuttal.

"Believe me, I understand. But think of all the good you do in helping others at the volunteer thrift store where you were recently hired. No matter who you are or what you do in life, there are others who need more help than you. Or, they are in worse shape financially or health wise."

"You know nothing of what I'm going through or had to deal with all my life. You had it on easy street. You never loved me. And I don't love you or mom. You both abandoned me."

How could his brother say he wasn't willing to assist. It certainly wasn't true that he didn't love him. They just hadn't been together long enough to forge a true brotherly bond.

At least offering Jasper a temporary residence with him and his family would ease some troubles while he collected himself and head down a positive path. Hope was kept alive that he wouldn't cause too much of a ruckus.

Thomas figured he'd be able to observe his older brother's work habits and general outlook on life. But when did Jasper stray onto a path of self-destructive and negative patterns? Thomas wondered. Even his failed marriage fell on the blameless shoulders of the in-laws.

Each job position in which Jasper interviewed and was hired ultimately ended in his firing. Instead of examining his role in the outcomes, Jasper chose to cast blame elsewhere for his failures.

Life had a way of handing you lemons. But that didn't mean it gave you an empty cart to toss all the blame into with others' names, he always felt.

He and Jasper reconnected only a year ago. Before that time, he wasn't privy to his older brother's seemingly lack of maturity. Since being together, however, he vowed he'd make a concerted effort to understand his personality and thought processes.

Only recently had this darker side of his brother's personality surfaced. And he didn't like what he'd been witnessing. He realized attempting to help Jasper himself wasn't a solution.

He had to protect his own family. Terrifying his neighbors and the entire neighborhood wasn't rational. And no one was laughing behind his back, as he accused many of them on several occasions.

He had to make a decision at that moment to protect his brother from himself.

Thomas pulled out his phone and dialed Emergency. Someone had to take charge of the situation. It was now or never. His ramblings spoke of further ill intentions.

Infuriated at what he felt was betrayal, Jasper cursed loud, then grabbed at the phone, causing it land on the floor.

Attempting to keep his voice even, Thomas held up his hands in a conciliatory gesture.

"Friends don't let friends destroy themselves. And definitely not family. Not if it's in their power to prevent it." Thomas sensed an easing of tensions and an small opening for action.

Thomas surprised Jasper as he subdued him. Jasper struggled until spent. His body relaxed, and he calmed down his tirade. But the voices inside still fought for his attention as Thomas noticed Jasper's face contort and his eyes unable to remain still. Helping his brother gain control of his life was Thomas' only concern now.

"Why would you help me. You never bothered growing up," Jasper hissed.

"Because I didn't understand. We lived apart. You with dad; me with mom after their divorce. Now that we're adults, I can see why mom decided to become a single parent. I'm just sorry that you were caught in the crossfire."

Thomas held his brother in place until help arrived. And he promised Jasper that he would be by his side until he received the help he desperately required and was crying out to receive.

Voces interiores

"No tengo segundas oportunidades.

Nunca me quisiste. Y yo no te quiero ni a ti ni a mamá. Ambos me abandonasteis".

Sigh. It's sometimes hard for other people to understand when a person is mentally unstable and struggling with his inner demons. The root cause is often tied to their childhood. This is the reason I don't appreciate couples going through divorce and the poor kids are caught in the war.

But Thomas is reasonable and smart. His commitment to help Jasper is admirable. Not everyone is brave enough to live with or befriend someone with mental issues. It often takes heart, courage and patience. In this case, empathy goes a long way. A very touching and realistic story! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day. !LADY 💕

Your are right. It is hard to live with, especially if it's a family members. You want to help, but often are not equipped with the professional tools. Helping them find the help they need speaks volumes of love and commitment.

I learned in school and have always heard the nature vs. nurture concept. I feel that Jasper's case is one of nurture. The boys were split, going in different directions. It is highly possible that one parent failed. It is admirable of Thomas to try to reconnect with his brother. Perhaps if it had been earlier in their growing years, he could have made a deeper impact on him.

Thanks for your visit and thoughtful insight into my story. I appreciate it and your support.

Take care and have a lovely rest of your week.
