The Ability To See The Future Or The Past? || LOH 162

This question posed by @tibaire for the Ladies Of Hive Community Contest brings to mind a funny, related chat I had with a friend. You see, she spends a significant amount of her time on the Binance site, crypto trading, reading articles and staying informed on the latest in the crypto world.

So she sends me a chat, ranting that a stable coin recently released is pumping and somehow she missed it. She wishes for the power to see the future so she doesn't miss this type of opportunity. My response is to laugh at her because it's a wish that may not work well for her.

The reality is most people would prefer to see the future rather than the past and this is also my choice. This bores down to the concept of time and perception. Many people are as intrigued by them as I am.

Life is transient and our human nature fleeting. So because we want to make the most of the time we have, we would do interesting things or go to some dangerous lengths or quests to have this ability. I see this as a slippery slope because it's not an ability that comes with our natural selves.

The ability to see the future has its benefits. We can foresee the consequences of our actions or decisions, and change them to favour us, if we want. With this ability comes the sense of control and foresight over any situation. Nothing can take us by surprise; life becomes certain. In the case of my friend, if she had this ability, then she would have thrown some money into this stable coin, watch it pump and make an alarming profit from the trading. But she didn't, hence her wish.

Life is filled with uncertainties which makes it interesting in my opinion. In these uncertainties, our decisions can turn out good, beneficial or bad, unprofitable and heartbreaking sometimes. Then regret sets in and we "wish" we knew the outcome of such a choice before making it.

I'm thinking: what if this ability to see the future comes naturally? I think life might become overwhelming because we would want to control everything and everyone since we "know" the outcome.

We might become complacent, overconfident and not be too invested in improving our world. This takes the fun out of life and feels very unnatural. Some people might even go as far as abusing this ability because, let's be honest, we humans have a tendency to abuse good things.

On the other hand, the ability to see the past in my opinion is pointless unless it becomes very necessary like solving a life-threatening matter. I say this because the past is a life we have lived and moved on from, why look back? Seeing the past is basically history lessons and I got tons of those in school. I enjoyed my history class as I learned about the choices people made and how it shaped our world.

The good that comes from this ability is that valuable lessons can be learned from mistakes and used to shape our present lives. But if a person (with this ability) has no control, he may want to 'abuse' this power by changing the past with the hopes of fixing it. I have seen some time travel movies and this sort of decision never turns out well. Once an incident is past, it's best to respect it and move on.

From an emotional perspective, revisiting the past may pull us into regrets and depression if it's an unpleasant situation. But if it's good, it brings nostalgia. Either way, these may prevent us from moving forward. Our lives are built to be dynamic. We cannot be stagnant.

So if I'm to choose between seeing the future or the past, I'll settle for seeing the future because I want the benefits of making good decisions and avoiding life's pitfalls.

I believe we possess a subtle form of the ability to see the future or 'know' through our instincts or dreams/visions. We get these nudges or 'feelings' that guide us towards possible outcomes in some situations. Oftentimes, we ignore them and get into trouble. Some people are highly sensitive and attuned to this part of their nature.

Overall, it's not possible to see the future every time so we learn to trust our instincts and be guided by our discretion. The beauty of life is embracing the uncertainties and making the right choices.
