AFRICAN DRESS CULTURE

If I should be biased as an African Nigerian, I would say the African culture has the best dress style compared with the Europeans, Americans and other parts of the world. But to be fair, every dress sense is unique to traditional and cultural heritage. The Europeans, Asians and Americans dress according to their cultural heritage and I think Africans try in so many ways to copy them instead of adopting our own cultural heritage. For example, looking at the picture below, I'm wearing a suit which I used for my project defense, this is because official laws state that I wear them.

Why can't we make the African style of dressing an official dressing?... Would it be bad if you show up to work on a Monday morning in your native attire?... Or go for an interview dressed in Your cultural attire… Many Africans do not know how to dress In their cultural attire, and many feel dressing the English way is the normal way of dressing. Even me had this ideology, until I started writing this post which shows just how much the English had colonized the world. Today there's almost nowhere in the world where people don't dress the English way which makes me wonder how on earth this happened.

The worst is that many Africans don't value their traditional weddings the way they value the white wedding, or should I call it English wedding. Meanwhile, the English wedding is traditional for the English. Many don't understand that English itself is a tradition of a people who have accepted it as their lifestyle and decided to teach the world their lifestyle making it look unique. We Africans only celebrate our culture on occasions, we do not live our culture. This is why the white (who live and breathe their culture) can easily affect us with theirs. We tend to look at those who dress culturally often as local and those who dress the English way as international personalities, meanwhile we who can't represent our culture often are even more local than they are because they have an identity in the world something we do not have.

Dressing gives a person an identity, therefore dressing in our culture shows our roots, and how proud we are about it despite what others think about it. I mean, if we (Africans) are not proud of our roots, or show our pride by the value we put in them, who would do it for us? Today we have become so creative that we now produce cultural wears in both occasional and causal ways. So why not promote it by purchasing that nice cultural attire instead of a suit, or that casual cultural attire instead of a hoodie. I'm not a fashion designer, but I'm already thinking about ways to promote the cultural dress Sense lol… If you like, you can share what you think about my opinion on African cultural Dressing.

THIS IS MY RESPONSE TO THE HIVE GHANA PROMPT FOR THE WEEK.

The funny thing is, the whites actually like African clothing more than we the Africans. I guess that’s the beauty of life.
As Africans, we should be proud of where we come from and cherish our culture because no matter where we go that’s who we are. Thanks for sharing with us.
