FEAR THE LESSON

(Edited)

Have you ever had to solve a problem by yourself? This is the point I will say some people are fortunate to have parents capable of shielding them from the wickedness in the world (at least to an extent). I was talking with a colleague of mine some days back and she was saying how her parents always came through for her during her school days and how they are talking about ensuring she finishes her masters before getting married. I looked at her and told her she was lucky because some of us are not that fortunate and had to start learning how to survive in this world all by ourselves. I look at my life and the fears I've had to face and promise myself that if I ever get the privilege of raising my own kids, I will teach them early how to survive and stand-alone Because I noticed it's easier when you are taught than left alone to figure everything out yourself.

I've always been scared of talking and speaking out as a child, today I still prefer not to talk, but most importantly I was always scared of getting into trouble. Not because of the trouble itself but because I know I might not be bold enough to talk my way out or explain my actions. Even though I always acted as though I was scared of nothing, deep down I didn't want anything close to trouble. Getting into the higher institution, no one told me I would be left alone to face the real world, I got to learn it all, especially speaking up for myself. I started by learning how to feed myself without calling my parents and then learning how to pay some bills myself. It wasn't easy at first because all these required me to talk so I could get those linear jobs.

The life-defining incident for me was when one of the most feared lecturers sent me out of his class for not having his textbook and then set a test for those who had already purchased it. According to him that test would make up 50% of the total assessment so missing it meant I would have to struggle to get 50/50 in the exam. Although I wasn't the only one he sent out, I was the only one with no idea whatsoever what I was going to do next. Everyone was making calls and some were borrowing money but I couldn't make any calls because I knew my parents didn't have enough to feed Talkless sent me money for textbooks. I was so scared trying to picture getting a carryover and meeting that hell of a lecturer again. I knew I needed to do something, but I didn't dare to speak up.

This was me sweating profusely as I stood there thinking about the best way to beg the lecturer knowing how wicked he is without embarrassing myself. When I decided to make a move, my heart began to race fast as though my life was on the line, I became pressed immediately and my legs could hardly carry my body. But seeing him at the door, I knew that was my chance. I didn't know what to say, but I knew I couldn't keep mute. By the time I was staring at him in the face, the words finally came… I can't remember exactly what I said or how I said it, but I remember whatever I said was a lie, and he believed it because I spoke as though I knew what I was saying. However, I also remember my legs almost failing me while I told the lie. Immediately I heard go inside every atom of fear disappeared as though something changed in me, he later said the only reason he allowed me was because he knew I was a good boy 😂… well I am right 😂😂😂. Anyway, one thing that experience taught me is to keep a good relationship with my lecturers and keep a good reputation in school… this lesson helped me throughout my school days.

There's so much value in equipping the next generation with the skills and mindsets to advocate for themselves, rather than shielding them from challenges. It's a delicate balance, for sure, but your personal experience gives you a unique perspective to draw from.

Your good relationship with your teacher came into help in that scenario. In all we do, we should be kind and disciplined. Nice one.

We do not wish that things go south for us but nothing beats teaching your kids the essence of independence so they know how to stand by themselves in difficult times. It's very important.

I think every parent would like to protect their kid from the harsh world out there as much as possible, but there is always a limit to what they can do, they do their best and leave the rest.

That was tough what you went through but it is cool that moment you finally summoned the courage to start speaking up for yourself.

Not every parent... A lot of parents these days are still kids themselves

It is good to teach our children to be confident because we can't be with them all the time. I am glad you eventually summoned courage to plead with your lecturer to allow you go in for the test.
