THE MUSIC CYCLE
Sometimes I hear some of the songs that are released and the first thing that comes to mind is for how long will this thing last. In my opinion the weight of lyrics in music die as each generation passes away, if it continues like this, we might end up with a generation whose music is all about beats with little or nothing to say. If you listen to songs that trended in the 60s, or lyrics to hymns written centuries ago, you would be able to feel the heart of the writer from just the lyrics. Then good music was mainly judged by how much power the lyrics carried. Then came a generation that valued the voice of the artist more than the lyrics thus you find people wanting to listen to the voice and not the words.

Although there were still beautiful voices then that still choose to make their lyrics good, the major thing about that generation was the wanting to copy older songs with beautiful lyrics and sing it with beautiful voices. From there the artist found energy in songs, so it wasn't just about the lyrics or voice, but the energy emitting from it. This was when rap songs started coming into the light because they said those lyrics in words and gave it a great beat to bring out the energy which is found in their voices. Later on we had a generation that put effort into creating great beats with dancers promoting the songs. So whether or not the lyrics were wack, what majority of people look at are the dance steps in it or what dance steps the beat would go with.
So it's safe to say right now music is more about the dance than about the lyrics. The only thing that makes the beat worth listening to is the dance that can go with it. I think this is due to the advancement of technology, people have heard a lot of beautiful voices, we have discovered talents everywhere with everyone getting used to the voices and everyone having a very low attention span to want to listen to the lyrics. The attention span of the average person today is about 8.5 seconds. This means you've got 8.5 seconds to convince someone you're worth listening to. This is why a lot of music starts with a very captivating beat that makes people stay to see something else. And that something else must bring out a particular energy in them because they don't want to pay attention to details.
Before now there weren't a lot of things that would intrigue us, but now, it's as though we have seen it all and are looking for something new. So let's be honest, it's easier to use your body to make something look new than to use your voice. And that is what has made music the way it is today. I think this is a cycle of music, and man would always evolve because there's really nothing new under the sun. I think a time would come when people would get tired of the energy and would just want something that calms them down, making their attention span longer and their inquisitiveness to want to listen to details. And before you know it, everyone would prefer to listen to the lyrics again.
