Setsubun-Japanese Traditional Event With Beans
People celebrated the Setsubun event on the 3rd of February this year in Japan. Setsubun (節分) is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan, and people usually celebrate the bean-throwing event called "Mamemaki (豆まき)." It involves a tradition of throwing dried soybeans. It's a lot of fun events for children and families. Throwing the soybeans represents getting rid of bad luck and welcoming good luck, saying “Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi (鬼は外、福は内).” Children throw beans at the demon until it leaves. After the fun event, everyone eats beans our age (or plus one) in soybeans. When I was young, we learned that we eat beans our age amount. I remember my parents and grandparents saying, "I can't eat anymore! Too much!" and they all laughed.
Additionally, some people eat thick sushi rolls called "Ehou-Maki (恵方巻き)" as well. Ehou-Maki is believed to bring good fortune if eaten while facing the year’s “Eho” (good luck direction). We should keep silent when we are eating it up. We have many interesting traditional cultures with food in Japan.
I didn't create a throwing event this year, but I introduced some cultural talk to my online Japanese students. My student still remembers that we did the bean-throwing event together when he was younger at my place a few years ago. His younger brother was so polite because he thought it was rude to throw something in my place. First of all, he was hesitant so much. After his older brother found out that it was actually fun, the younger brother started enjoying throwing beans. They ate their age of beans after our lessons.
Actually, my husband made chilli with black beans. His French friend also celebrates the first day of each month by cooking bean meals to wish everyone good luck. I guess beans are seen as healthy symbols in some cultures.
It's snowing again here. I took a photo of a snowstorm from my window after my Japanese lesson. Then, I created an AI image of a Japanese demon. It looks like a Kabuki demon. It looks very scary but cool. I like the tattoo-looking teeth design. Well, I hope we will have some kind of spring hints someday soon after the Setsubun event!

節分 豆文化
２月３日は節分でした。節分とは各季節の始まりの日の前日とのこと。節分の日に、日本では恒例の豆まきをします。子供たちや家族にとって楽しい行事のひとつだと思います。「鬼は外、福は内」の掛け声と共に鬼がいなくなるまで豆を巻いて福を呼びます。楽しいイベントのあとは、みんなそれぞれの歳の数（またはプラスひとつ）だけ豆を食べます。私が小さい時は歳の数だけ豆を食べると教わりました。両親と祖父母が「もう食べられない！多すぎるよ！」と言って笑っていたのを思い出します。
それから恵方巻きという海苔巻きを食べる文化もありますね。縁起のいい方角に向かって黙って恵方巻きを最後まで食べきるのです。日本には食べ物に関する面白い伝統行事がたくさんありますね。
今年は豆まきをしませんでしたが、オンラインの日本語の生徒さんと一緒に節分の文化の話をしました。数年前、その生徒さんと彼の弟さんがまだ小さな頃、私の家で節分の行事をしたことをしっかり記憶に留めていてくれています。彼の弟はまだ中学年でとてもかわいらしかったです。よその家で物を投げるなんて経験したことのない弟さんは、そんなことをしていいものかどうか迷ってしばらく豆を投げられずにいました。お兄さんが思い切って投げると、思いの外楽しいことがわかったらしく、それをみていた弟は意を決して豆を投げました。豆まきを楽しんだあとは、歳の数だけ豆を食べました。
今年は豆まきはしませんでしたが、主人が黒豆のチリを作ってくれました。主人のフランス人のお友達は、毎月一日に豆料理を作ってご馳走するということをしていました。みんなで幸せを願う意味合いがあるそうです。豆が健康の象徴である文化は日本以外にも多いのだと思います。
また雪です。日本語レッスンの後に窓から見える景色を写真に撮りました。AIで作成した鬼のイメージは歌舞伎に出てくる鬼のようです。とても怖くてかっこいいです。タトゥーが入ったような歯のデザインがいいですね。節分が過ぎたので、そろそろ少しだけでも春の兆しが感じられるといいのですが。
この窓に見える春の景色が待ち遠しいです。吹雪についてまた書きたいと思います。

In our region also it is considered bad to talk during feast the old aged keep saying this but I'm seeing that people keep ignoring them .

In my region "Cuba" we eat a lot of beans, so we celebrate good luck all year round 😅. Although as a result of inflation, it is practically a luxury to eat them right now 😮💨.

We didn't celebrate setsubun in the house but we got the roll that looks like a huge ehoumaki from Lawson, but it was a dessert 😅 I guess that counts 😂
Lawson always has nice bento selections. I miss コンビニ food very much. I want to eat コンビニ's sweets🤭 I think I will try to eat almost everything there.
HAhahaha コンビニsweets have a very good selection but sometimes I get tired eating them. 😅 Sometimes is fine though 😀

確かに、他人の家にお邪魔して物を投げるなんてwww考えただけで笑ってしまいますね。そりゃ遠慮しますよね。
でも、これは季節のイベントなんだ！と思ってもらって楽しんでもらえてよかったです。
黒豆のチリ、めっちゃくちゃ美味しそうです！！私も真似して作ろうと思います。
そして日本語ではまさに「豆に働く」とか「まめまめしい」とか健康で元気で活動的な様子を「豆」に喩えますが、世界に通じる物であったことに感動しました。
それにしてもコトさんのお家の周りの雪は変わらずすごいですね！
カレンダーでは冬の終わりですが、まだしばらく冬が続きますね。
その生徒さんは日本の文化は常に厳格で品がよい静かなイメージがあったようです。私が大きな声で福は内！と言って豆を投げたのを見て目をまん丸にして驚いていました。大声を出して、いつもはしてはいけないことをするのってすごくスリルがあって楽しいですよね。
この黒豆のチリはとても美味しかったです。豆は和風味付けもいいですが、メキシコ風もいいですよね。ご飯もいいですが、ナチョスチップスを添えて食べるとモリモリ食べられます。
本当ですね、日本では豆にちなんだ言葉が多いですね。昔の人って本当にすごいです。暦通りにもうそろそろ春めいて欲しいです！雪はもうそろそろ飽きてきました。最近体調はいかがですか？チリも体が温まると思うので良さそうだと思いました。
