This week I wanted to join the community initiative with a very good question proposed by @merit.ahama. I think if you've seen my other posts, the quickest conclusion would be that I'm more of a book person than a movie person, but that's not entirely true. Today I'll tell you why...
Pues aunque la pregunta indica que debo decidir por uno, lo cierto es que me resulta imposible. No tengo una preferencia de uno por encima del otro, sino que disfruto ambos medios de entretenimiento tan distintos entre sí como son. Y esa es la cuestión, son sus diferencias lo que los distingue y los hace experiencias muy particulares, con sus características propias que simplemente no pueden ser comparables, su esencia no es la misma.
Por ejemplo, cuando quiero entretenerme con algo que tenga estímulos directos y claros, que no deba imaginarme ciertos detalles o interpretarlos con apenas unos pocos estímulos, entonces las películas son mi opción. Además, son un entretenimiento primordialmente visual, por lo que si quiero ver algo llamativo, que visualmente sea estimulante, entonces prefiero mil veces ver una película antes que otra cosa.
Well, although the question suggests I should choose one, the truth is that it's impossible for me. I don't have a preference for one over the other, but rather I enjoy both forms of entertainment, as different as they are. And that's the point: their differences are what distinguish them and make them very unique experiences, with their own characteristics that simply can't be compared; their essence is not the same.
For example, when I want to be entertained with something that has direct and clear stimuli, where I don't have to imagine certain details or interpret them with just a few stimuli, then movies are my choice. Furthermore, they are primarily visual entertainment, so if I want to see something striking, something that is visually stimulating, then I'd much rather watch a movie than something else.
Además está la cuestión de que no es solo un entretenimiento visual, sino que es audiovisual, puesto que se complementa lo que vemos con lo que escuchamos. Por otro lado, no solo tenemos la historia que bien pudiéramos llegar a imaginar si leemos el guión, sino que tenemos lo que se supone es la representación más fidedigna a lo que el director quería transmitir, a lo que quiere comunicar a través de las distintas expresiones artísticas que vemos en las películas.
Hay una producción enorme detrás de cada film que lleva un mensaje tanto en lo más evidente como en los detalles más pequeños, todo hecho para contar algo de forma rápida, eficaz y precisa (si se hace bien, obviamente).
There's also the fact that it's not just visual entertainment, but audiovisual, since what we see is complemented by what we hear. On the other hand, we don't just have the story we might imagine if we read the script, but we have what is supposedly the most faithful representation of what the director wanted to convey, what he wants to communicate through the different artistic expressions we see in films.
There's an enormous amount of production behind each film that conveys a message in both the most obvious and the smallest details, all done to tell a story quickly, effectively, and accurately (if done right, obviously).
En cambio, los libros hasta cierto punto son un entretenimiento mucho más estimulante, puesto que al ser solo la narración de la historia, hay muchos aspectos que quedan a la libre interpretación y por tanto, a la imaginación del lector. Es decir, hay detalles descritos en los libros que pueden ser específicos, pero carecen del estímulo visual que existe en las películas, entonces en base a tu propia interpretación como lector debes imaginar cómo se vería ese protagonista, cómo se sentiría experimentar lo descrito, en general cómo sería en la vida real lo que indican en la historia.
Por ello, este medio de entretenimiento quizás puede considerarse que conlleva un poco más de esfuerzo por parte del consumidor puesto que requiere más atención y de comprensión lectora. Y aunque no sea tan ligero, la verdad es que leer es una experiencia mucho más inmersiva y entretenida, puesto que mediante la lectura se combinan el arte y la interpretación, porque cada quien lo entenderá a su manera, basándose en su propio sistema de creencias, conocimientos y experiencias subjetivas. Así que este entretenimiento también me resulta fascinante.
On the other hand, books are, to a certain extent, much more stimulating entertainment, since as they are merely a narrative, many aspects are open to free interpretation and, therefore, to the reader's imagination. That is to say, there are details described in books that may be specific, but they lack the visual stimulation found in movies. So, based on your own interpretation as a reader, you must imagine what that protagonist would look like, how they would feel experiencing what is described, and, in general, what what the story indicates would be like in real life.
Therefore, this entertainment medium can perhaps be considered to require a bit more effort on the part of the consumer, since it requires more attention and reading comprehension. And although it may not be as easy, the truth is that reading is a much more immersive and entertaining experience, since reading combines art and interpretation, because each person will understand it in their own way, based on their own belief system, knowledge, and subjective experiences. So, I also find this entertainment fascinating.
Por ello no consigo decidirme por uno solo, porque ambos tienen su propia magia que depende más bien de mi propio estado de ánimo lo que decida consumir en determinado momento. Hay días en los que simplemente quiero relajarme y ver algo, otros en los que quiero sumergirme en los mundos descritos entre las páginas. Así que soy una persona «de libros» y «de películas», escoger una sola no me resulta viable.
That's why I can't decide on just one, because both have their own magic, and what I decide to consume at a given moment depends more on my own mood. Some days I simply want to relax and watch something, others when I want to immerse myself in the worlds described within the pages. So, I'm both a "book" and a "movie" person; I can't afford choosing just one.
