MANTA DE MAYOTTE
En novembre 2011, je réalise ma première photographie d’une ventrale de raie Manta dans le lagon de Mayotte. Une démarche artistique d’un passionné de rencontre animale qui se transformera très vite en un projet de connaissance dès lors que je comprendrai que la photographie d’une ventrale permet l’identification unique d’un individu. Il s’agissait là de la première Manta de Mayotte que j’identifiais. Dix années plus tard, en mai 2021, je prends en photographie et j’identifie la dernière des raies Manta présente dans cet ouvrage, la 33ième. Entre ces deux dates l’association ATOLL née et regroupe des particuliers mais aussi beaucoup de professionnels de toutes spécialités de la mer. Entre autres projets de connaissance, ATOLL développe son projet Manta auquel j’apporte tout mon soutien et mes données. Elle permettra durant 10 ans de présenter les premiers éléments de connaissance de cette espèce, et de construire le premier catalogue de raies Manta identifiées dans le lagon de Mayotte.
Ce livre amène le lecteur de la connaissance générale des raies Manta, à celle des Manta de Mayotte. Apprendre de leur biologie, de leurs habitudes, savoir les reconnaitre, les identifier, les approcher, les respecter, les protéger, cet ouvrage se présente ainsi au lecteur et se conclut par un catalogue de la majeure partie des raies Manta enregistrées par l’association ATOLL. Consultable en tournant les pages de ce livre mais aussi en scannant leur QRcode, les «fiches Manta» permettent au lecteur d’apprendre à les reconnaitre. Le lecteur pourra alors s’inspirer dans un premier temps de la connaissance apportée dans cet ouvrage pour ensuite participer à l’évolution de ce catalogue en communiquant ses données et ses photographies prises lors de ses sorties en mer.
Pour conclure, ce livre est aussi un « beau livre ». La photographie ne se suffisant pas à elle-même, la connaissance rimant trop souvent avec somnolence, j’aime bien l’idée de lier les deux afin de rendre la première utile et la seconde plus attractive. Entre connaissance et contemplation, un peu comme l’on regarde la mer, je vous invite à regarder ce livre.

I am very pleased to present my new book on Hive. This is my sixth book.
In November 2011, I made my first photograph of a manta ray belly in the lagoon of Mayotte. An artistic approach of an animal meeting enthusiast that will quickly turn into a project of knowledge as soon as I understand that the photography of a belly allows the unique identification of an individual. This was the first Mayotte Manta I identified. Ten years later, in May 2021, I photograph and I identify the last of the Manta rays present in this book, the 33rd. Between these two dates the association ATOLL born and brings together individuals but also many professionals of all specialties of the sea. Among other knowledge projects, ATOLL develops its Manta project to which I bring all my support and my data. It will allow for 10 years to present the first elements of knowledge of this species, and to build the first catalog of Manta rays identified in the lagoon of Mayotte.
This book brings the reader from the general knowledge of the Manta rays, to that of the Manta de Mayotte. Learning from their biology, their habits, knowing how to recognize them, identify them, approach them, respect them, protect them, this book presents itself to the reader and concludes with a catalogue of most of the Manta rays registered by the association ATOLL. Viewable by turning the pages of this book but also by scanning their QRcode, the «Manta sheets» allow the reader to learn to recognize them. The reader will then be able to draw inspiration from the knowledge provided in this book and then participate in the evolution of this catalogue by communicating his data and photographs taken during his trips to sea.
To conclude, this book is also a «beautiful book». Photography is not self-sufficient, knowledge rhymes too often with drowsiness, I like the idea of linking the two to make the first useful and the second more attractive. Between knowledge and contemplation, a bit like looking at the sea, I invite you to look at this book.
