Dealing With The Nightmare Of Living Costs
My country's cost of living has become unmanageable; even when I go to the market, I manage to buy the little that I can afford because, most of the time, when I make a list of the food and household items I want to buy, I end up not buying some of them due to the high price increase. I wonder when this nightmare will end. Life in my country has not been easy; I can remember times when things were not as difficult as they are now, but we still complain about the high cost of living.
I look around and see that no one is willing to improve things; instead, they are all using inflation as an excuse to make life intolerably difficult for everyone. Business owners are unwilling to let things go because of the profits they are making. Farmers are also selling their goods at a premium price, and when you try to confront them, their standard response is, "Everything is expensive and they have to place their produce on high rate for them to be able to afford their needs." Who do we have the blame on? Well, since they are also attempting to survive, I can not really hold it against them.
I could recall, Everyone was complaining when the exchange rate was high, but I was happy about it because I knew that when I converted my dollar into Naira, I would make a good profit. You might say that I am selfish, but that is not the case at all because I know that if the exchange rate is reduced, the price of the things I buy in the market will not change. Yes, the exchange rate was reduced, but things are still very difficult, so I was right to follow my instincts because I live in a country where the law of gravity hardly ever applies. Most Nigerians are grinning and suffering as a result of inflation.
CONSIDERING THE SALARY EARNER
Government employees receive salaries that are stagnant despite the rising cost of living. I feel sorry for them, especially for those who are solely dependent on government work and have no other source of income; I can not even begin to imagine how they make ends meet on their fixed salary. Around me, I know some government employees who are struggling to make ends meet. They have debt and credit that they must repay when they receive their paychecks, leaving them without any money. If they were given the chance again, I think they would seize it.
CONSIDERING OTHER COUNTRIES
I have never been abroad, so I can not compare the cost of living there to what it is here at home. There is no doubt that even with my meager earnings here, it will not be sufficient for me if I decide to travel abroad. I will manage my meager income in my home country despite the challenges, but if I have the chance to travel abroad for pleasure, I will take advantage of it. Right now, I have no intention of moving abroad to live.
Well, I still think that our leaders can take action to address the pervasive issue in my nation before things spread out of control because long-term inflation will eat away at the economy of the country; some people are even working longer hours to make more money, but is that really the answer? They will work for long hours and still spend the money on ostentatious purchases. It is in everyone's best interests to have the higher authority find ways to suppress inflation. Paying for living expenses has not been easy for me, but eventually I believe everything will work out.
