Autumn in the Cemetery

avatar

Graceland Cemetery in Chicago was designed by landscape architects and many wealthy Chicagoans purchased family plots in the 119 acre park-like burial grounds after it was built in 1860.

It is a beautiful place to go for a walk on an autumn day when the trees are decked out in their colorful leaves.

The garden cemetery offers a sense of history of the people who were responsible for building the great city of Chicago.

Here you can find the graves of architects that built the skyscrapers, famous private eyes like Pinkerton, baseball and boxing greats, like Ernie Banks and Jack Johnson who was the first Black heavyweight boxing champion There are inventors and merchants. You see the graves of people that city streets were named after. There are cemetery tours available

The leaves on the maple trees were stunning! It is such a beautiful time of the year to walk back through history.

I focused in this post on many of the beautiful trees, but I also have photos of many of the fascinating monuments that I will share soon.

Beautiful fall walk... even if it is uncomfortably close to Halloween to be hanging out at a cemetery 😅

Waoo I never thought of a cemetery as a tourist place, but that one is very nice for the trees and structure it has, nice pictures.

What a beautiful walkabout through the cemetery. I love seeing the monuments that were made back in the day. They have so much interest compared to a plain headstone that is common today. I can't wait to see your post on them. ♥

Vibrant colours depicted in this serenity, it's a restful place indeed for the great Chicagoans.

It looks like a beautiful place. The colorful trees of Autumn put more beauty to it.

But, a cemetry is turned into a park! Somewhat weird!

It was a park-like setting from the beginning and people chose to have their final resting place here.
