Travellers
As the number of plants on my balcony grew over the last few years, I always dreaded the day when it would be time to move. Eventually, it had to happen. Now I can officially confirm that my succulents have become real travellers. Of course, they didn't pay for the transport ticket because we took care of that. We were also the ones who packed and carried them to their new home - their new balcony.
My biggest doubt was how to transport them without breaking a lot of branches. For example, as Ruby Blush. It was so fuzzy and difficult to move it without making it harm... In the end, I packed it in a cardboard box and it was not so problematic (although there were a lot of fallen leaves and some broken branches). I had to throw away all of those but I kept a few that will be planted in a new pot. By the way, I gave away one pot from the same plant to save it from moving, and I also left one cactus in the old place.
On the other hand, some others suffered more damage and lost many leaves while I was moving them.
The easiest ones were the big ones, like the Crassula Ovata. You can see it shared a seat with a fan so I gave them a discount on the ticket price. 😂
Aloe Vera was the last one we moved into the new place. We wrapped it in a paper bag to protect it while carrying it into the car. That was a very heavy pot... I wanted to give it away too as I was already tired from the whole month of moving stuff but luckily my husband insisted on taking it with us. He said it was part of our family, and indeed, it is 12 years old, we found it almost half dead and with a bit of care and water, it survived and grew huge over all these years.
In this photo, it looks like an item that is on sale. 😂
My poor plants. I guess it was stressful for them too, but now we are getting there to find their definite place on the new balcony. At the moment all of this is provisional. Like, how a plant can live on a plastic paint bucket that I just put there until we use it? 😆 It even has a little shelf/table thing that will be used for it but without the paint bucket, of course.
The fuzzy one has got a cool stand from where the branches can hang, but the other smaller pots are at the moment on the top of the outside coffee tables. I still didn't get there to drink my morning coffee on the balcony as the plants occupied the table... (well, I can hold my mug in my hand maybe hahaha? 🤔)
I think Aloe Vera will be fine in this corner.
Weather... so, they will have to get used to the new weather conditions. This balcony gets sun from the early morning until the middle of the afternoon (when I took the photos it was cloudy). It means much more sun than they had until now. Plus, they faced for the first time rain... and it already rained several times.
That mix of a lot of sun and sudden rain that lasts for a few minutes and then again sun was not the best thing for this guy. I think he got sunburned.
I still have one of these Graptosedums although he lost many leaves in the transport. It is enough that you touch it a bit and the leaves fall. They are so fragile.
A few succulents got their place inside. It was cold one evening so I took them inside, made this little collage and liked it. They are now living in my husband's office. I hope they will like the inside life, and if not they can always find a small corner in the balcony, once we make a stand for them or hang the pots on the fence. Time will tell how the pots will be organized in their new place. 🍀
Let them get used to more sun slowly. Your fuzzy one will sunburn no matter what you do, they only like filtered light. Good luck!
There is an awning along the entire balcony, I have lowered this a few times when the sun was shining too much. That can be an option for very hot days.

Yes it will help. They also have the winter to get used to the sun which is a good, they don't go straight to roast. You'll find that your plants will be more compact, fatter and colourful. What's not to like?
Fatter? Ok, I hope it will apply just to the plants... or should I avoid being on the balcony so as not to get fatter me too? 🤣

The plants will hopefully get used to the new place and different temperatures. There are also a few small ones in the piano room ;)
Awwww... What a complex thing to move succulent plants!... On the other hand, how nice that you and your husband consider that Aloe Vera as part of the family!... :)) They are really ‘very lively’ plants I have many in our yards and I talk to them more than to other plants in general... I saw that beautiful ‘Jade’ (Crassula Ovata) and I found it beautiful... Mine suffered an ‘attack of one of my cats’ weeks ago and lost many leaves :( it is still ‘convalescing’... I'm glad the move turned out quite well after all! ;) Nice post @mipiano friend!

I didn't realise your plants are so big!! My aloe vera is in a pot the size of your smaller ones, and it keeps on toppling over. Not sure why 🤔
I don't know why it is with your aloe vera, but I think it is a bit different type (as you remember the flowers were not exactly the same). Or maybe your one needs more music 😉

I always have the feeling that Aeonium needs more water than the others, but they get now rain too so I should not overwater them

Little by little they will get used to it, some of them will get a bit sunburnt as you did, others... be careful with so much water... but little by little they will get better and yes, they suffer stress, like us but with love and care they will be fine!!! They look beautiful on the new balcony!💗

Yeah, but it all ads to the experience. If I ever will move again then I know - cardboard boxes, fix the pots and the travel can start :)

Your succulents have died too, in their way, but they will recover, for life is strong and beautiful! I understand your blog about these flowers as a metaphor for what is happening in your life.
I love your generous balcony where all your plants will cozy up and enjoy seeing you having coffee next to them. There are very nice succulents, I tried to grow a few myself but failed. I am very generous with water, and, unfortunately, it is not always good when you are generous.

Yes, my plants do feel the change, the stress they got while travelling in the car and now the new surroundings and a bit different weather. They have died for the old home and will be reborn for the new one. I hope. We also have to adapt. I guess I have some maps in my mind from the apartment where we lived for the last 12 years. In the morning when I want to make my coffee (half asleep) I automatically go toward the part of the kitchen where in the other one was the coffee. hahaha, then I say myself - to the other way!! 😂
Yeah, succulents don't need as much water as some other plants. That's why my orchid is always thirsty, as I don't remember giving it more often water 😅
And thank you, we are so happy and excited with this stage, getting it slowly how we want it to be but nothing has to be definite. If we one day don't feel this was the ultimate destination, then we will search for changes again. But right now I don't want to move at least for some years 😁
I've always admired those who have the strength to change places and lives. I didn't have that courage, and now I'm sorry. Another regret added to the long list I started writing once I passed 70.
So I wish you to enjoy life to the fullest and to have a shorter list when you start writing it!
A list of regrets? Never thought about writing one or that someone would write such a list, though there were probably things we all could have done differently in our past. But many things serve as lessons
It is not necessarily a paper list; it is a metaphor for remembering the regrets of old age. Not all people have that, but I do.

Sí, son ya suculentas que tienen varios años, han crecido bien y siempre tengo nuevos pequeños "bebés". Espero se adaptan :)
