NEARER MY GOD TO THEE

Hello beloved friends! "Nearer, My God, to Thee," a hymn etched in cultural memory, resonates far beyond its simple melody. Composed in 1841 by Sarah Flower Adams, an English poet and activist, the lyrics yearn for spiritual closeness with God, even when faced with life's hardships.

Each verse, punctuated by the poignant refrain "Nearer, my God, to Thee," evokes different imagery – a lost traveler, Jacob's dream of a celestial ladder, and the anticipation of unending joy. This tapestry of emotions offers solace and hope, reminding listeners that even in darkness, God remains an ever-present source of strength.

My choice of this song proceeds from my love of it and how resonant I find it is to me. It communicates to the existential condition of man and a deep sitted conviction which binds us to the divine regardless of life's occasional misery. It is used often in Catholic churches during this period of Lent - a period of repentance and charity which began on Wednesday and will span for 40 days.

Although the hymn has three verses, I sang only two with the hope of making the video shorter and a little more engaging. Below are the lyrics.
