Settling for healthy - LOH #220

It's hilarious that I'm writing about my self care recipes on a day like today. My today's meal was so unhealthy and I knew it but I was too stressed to do something about it so I ended up going with what was available.

Being a student, your daily routines can never be the same. There are times where your days are so stress-free that you even begin to consider if it was possible to prepone some of your future stress to fill up those gaps and make the equation balanced now and in the nearest future. Then, there are days that the amount of stress you experience, you wonder if the gates of hell decided to shift it's location closer to where you are. And as a result of how uncoordinated your days are, when it comes to eating, you just have to make do with whatever you find available because honestly, hunger is not an option.

My eating habits, like my school days, are very uncoordinated. Some days, you see me go all out in eating healthy - fruits, vegetables and complete meals. But the other days, you'll see me settling for noodles, snacks and the likes, as meals for the whole day. I prioritize eating healthy a lot and one of the things to prioritize when it comes to eating healthy, are fruits.

Here, in my school, finding fruits isn't a so easy task because a refrigerator isn't something I have access to as a student and the market isn't somewhere I find myself everyday. Due to that, there are very few fruits I can have access to. I love fruit salads a lot and when I see them in the market, I usually buy them. But you see, fruit salads are costly in my side of the world. A plate of fruit salad here, is sold for N3000 ($1.9) and being a student, that isn't something I can afford daily. So even though it's the best option, I usually have to opt for budget friendly options that will still fit into my initial purpose.

One of these options are oranges. I'm a huge fan of oranges and I can go to any lengths just to get those balls of orange juiciness. Oranges, when unpeeled last about two to three days before they begin to change taste and since I love this fruit a lot, I make sure I buy it when I go to market. Even when I'm running short on money, this is a fruit I make sure to get always because it's one of the most affordable fruits you'll ever find in the market. I don't joke with them.

I love watermelons too and when I go to the market, I always make sure to buy a little cut portion as sold in the market. This fruit can't last more than a day when cut so I usually buy it in little quantity for immediate consumption. Watermelons contain fluids a lot and i love them. This is another fruit I eat frequently.

Most of the foods in my area are carbohydrate centered and to create balance, proteins, vitamins and minerals are very necessary. Fruits being one, I eat eggs a lot. You see, not having a refrigerator has been a hindrance to so many things but shouldn't stop me from eating healthy, should it? So even when I can't afford meats or fish or whatever, because they are hard to preserve, I go for eggs. Eggs have saved me a lot and since eating an egg is equivalent to eating a full chicken (although not grown yet), I opt for them very frequently. Eggs work for me very well as a student since they do not require tiresome works in their preservation. A win it is.

If there is one particular thing in my eating habit that I love doing so much. It is taking milk. I don't know when I started it exactly but it's worked for me ever since. I love how refreshed I always feel after drinking milk - diluted or undiluted. After a very stressful day, before I go to sleep, if I'm too tired to boil the water, I dilute evaporated milk with cold water and drink it alone. It is a very soothing drink and it aids my sleep a lot. Even when I battle headaches, I take milk to help me sleep better and it always leaves me feeling refreshed. Milk, I believe is something I've been very consistent with in my eating habits. It suits my protein goals and it is something I enjoy a lot.

When it comes to my cravings, if it isn't junks, I satisfy them 90% of the time. I enjoy eating, I mean who doesn't? So when it comes to it, I go all out (when the opportunity and the resources aren't barriers).

I love to take milk too, any drink with milk as an ingredient can be a favourite at first try 🤭
Being a student is one of the challenge to eating healthy, I can very much relate.
