Krakow's churches no.6 – Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria and Saint. Małgorzata in Krakow

After visiting the Corpus Christi Church in Krakow's Kazimierz, it was time to visit other temples in Kazimierz. I thought about walking around and visiting the temples from the oldest to the youngest, so next I visited the second great Gothic Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria and Saint. Małgorzata.
Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria and Saint. Margaret is not much younger than the Church of Corpus Christi, or more precisely, by two years, because the idea to build the temple appeared in 1342 during the reign of Casimir the Great and was intended to provide a home for the Augustinians brought from Prague. The main construction works were completed in 1426, and in 1448 the construction of the southern nave and the porch was completed. So, over a hundred years passed from the idea to the final construction. This means that the Polish nuclear power plant project is not yet that delayed because, as history shows, investments are being implemented more slowly. We must hope that once our first nuclear power plant is built, its subsequent fate will not be as turbulent as the fate of the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria and Saint. Margaret who:
In 1443, he survived an earthquake during which the vault of the nave collapsed.
In 1534 it experienced a flood.
In 1556, a fire broke out in the church.
In the years 1655–1660, during the Swedish Deluge, the temples were used as a field hospital.
In 1786, the church experienced another earthquake, as a result of which the temple's vault was scratched.
During the partition, the Austrians liquidated the order and turned the church into a weapons depot, and later into a hay and straw warehouse.
In the interwar period, for some time, a student dormitory operated in the monastery buildings.
During World War II, the Germans deported all the monks from the monastery to concentration camps.
During the Polish People's Republic the Augustine Order was liquidated again
It was only in the 1970s that conservation works began and fragments of medieval polychromes were discovered.
The difficult fate of the temple resulted in the fact that the church furnishings are very modest and inside, the only thing that attracts attention is the slender, soaring silhouette of the temple made of limestone, full of various forms and extremely attractive architectural details. Inside the three-nave basilica temple, we will not see many valuable works of art, which cannot be said about the cloisters of the monastery, where Renaissance and Gothic frescoes have been preserved on the walls. The most valuable fresco is the Gothic-Renaissance image of Our Lady of Consolation, located in a chapel separated from the cloisters. The image is surrounded by cult and is considered a miraculous image, which makes it the oldest miraculous image of Mary in Poland.

Po odwiedzeniu Kościoła Bożego Ciała na Krakowskim Kazimierzu przyszedł czas na kolejne Kazimierskie świątynie. Pomyślałem, żeby iść kluczem i odwiedzać świątynie od tych najstarszych do tych najmłodszych, dlatego jako kolejny odwiedziłem drugi wielki gotycki Kościół św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej i św. Małgorzaty.
Kościół św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej i św. Małgorzaty jest niewiele młodszy od Kościoła Bożego Ciała, a dokładniej o dwa lata, bo pomysł wzniesienia świątyni pojawił się w roku 1342 za panowania Kazimierza Wielkiego i miał na celu zapewnienie domu dla sprowadzonych z Pragi augustianów. Zasadnicze prace budowlane zakończono w 1426 roku natomiast w 1448 zakończono budowę nawy południowej i kruchty. Tak więc od pomysłu do finału budowy minęło ponad sto lat. Wynika z tego, że projekt polskiej elektrowni atomowej, wcale nie są jeszcze tak bardzo opóźniony bo jak pokazuje historia, są wolniej realizowane inwestycje. Trzeba mieć nadzieje, że gdy już powstanie ta nasza pierwsza elektrownia atomowa, to jej późniejsze losy nie będą tak burzliwe jak losy Kościoła św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej i św. Małgorzaty który:
W 1443 roku przeżył trzęsienie ziemi, podczas którego runęło sklepienie nawy.
W 1534 roku przeszedł powódź.
W 1556 roku w kościele wybuchł pożar.
W latach 1655–1660 w trakcie szwedzkiego potopu wykorzystano świątynie jako lazaret.
W 1786 roku kościół przeżył kolejne trzęsienie ziemi w wyniku którego sklepienie świątyni zostało zarysowane.
W trakcie zaboru Austriacy zlikwidowali zakon i zamienili kościół na skład broni, a później na magazyn siana i słomy magazyn.
W okresie międzywojennym przez pewien czas w budynkach klasztornych funkcjonował akademik studencki.
W okresie II wojny światowej Niemcy wywieźli wszystkich zakonników z klasztoru do obozów koncentracyjnych.
W okresie PRL ponownie zlikwidowano zakon Augustynów
Dopiero od lat 70 XX wieku zaczęto prowadzić prace konserwatorskie podczas których odkryto fragmenty średniowiecznych polichromii.
Ciężkie losy świątyni skutkowały tym, że wyposażenie kościoła jest bardzo skromne i we wnętrzu jedno co głownie przykuwa uwagę to smukła, strzelista sylwetka świątyni wykonanej z kamienia wapiennego pełna różnorodnych form i niezwykle atrakcyjnych detali architektonicznych. Wewnątrz trójnawowej bazylikowej świątyni, nie zobaczymy za wiele cennych dzieł sztuki, czego nie można powiedzieć już o krużgankach klasztoru, gdzie na ścianach zachowały się renesansowe i gotyckie freski. Najcenniejszym freskiem jest gotycko-renesansowy, wizerunek Matki Boskiej Pocieszenia, znajdujący się w wydzielonej z krużganków kaplicy. Wizerunek otoczony jest kultem i uchodzi za cudowny obraz, co czyni go najstarszym cudownym wizerunkiem maryjny w Polsce.
