My mountain hikes no. 18 – Śnieżka

Every country in the world has its highest peak and there are probably people who travel around the world using this key. So far, I have managed to visit the highest peaks in Ukraine, Romania, Paraguay and the Czech Republic. It so happened that this highest mountain in the Czech Republic is also the highest mountain in the entire Sudetes and the border peak between Poland and the Czech Republic. Of course, we are talking about Mount Śnieżka, 1,602 meters above sea level. I conquered the mountain twice, once by walking to the Polish side along the Main Sądecki Trail. Then I set off from the PTTK shelter in Szrenica and ended the route in the Shelter on the Okraj Pass. The second ascent of Śnieżka was much easier, because I set off and finished the route in a Czech town of extraordinary beauty, i.e. in Pec pod Sněžkou. Both trips took place in winter, so I found out for myself that talking about Śnieżka as a mountain with extremely difficult weather conditions is 100 percent justified. The first time, immediately after leaving and taking 2 photos at the top, I started a quick descent because the wind and piercing frost were unbearable. The second time, coming from the Czech side, we first passed the upper station of the mountain railway located not far from the peak of Śnieżka, and then a strange building that was a mountain shelter made of an ordinary container. There is a certain curiosity related to the height of Śnieżka, namely in the 16th century, Krzysztof Schilling, the then rector of the school in Jelenia Góra, using all his knowledge at that time and all the measuring instruments available to him, measured the height of the peak of Śnieżka at 5,500 meters above the level of the Jelenia Góra Valley, i.e. about 6,000 meters above sea level. So the news spread around the world that Śnieżka, according to 16th century knowledge, is the highest mountain in Europe. How great must have been the surprise of the inhabitants of the Alps who came to the Sudetes to see this colossus...
Another interesting fact about Śnieżka are the numerous objects located on its peak. In addition to the upper station of the cable car and the strange container, you can also find the chapel of St. Wawrzyńca from 1665 and the most characteristic and probably one of the most recognizable buildings in Poland, the High Mountain Observatory of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.

Każdy kraj na świcie ma swój najwyższy szczyt i zapewne są osoby, które podróżując po świecie poruszają się właśnie takim kluczem. Do tej pory udało mi się odwiedzić najwyższe szczyty na Ukrainie, w Rumuni, w Paragwaju i w Czechach. Tak się złożyło, że ta najwyższa góra w Czechach to jednocześnie najwyższa góra w całych Sudetach i szczyt graniczny między Polską, a Czechami. Mowa oczywiście o liczącej 1602 metry nad poziomem morza górą Śnieżka. Górę zdobyłem dwukrotnie, raz idąc pod polskiej strony po Głównym Szlaku Sądeckim. Wówczas wyruszyłem ze schroniska PTTK na Szrenicy, a trasę zakończyłem w Schronisko na Przełęczy Okraj. Drugie zdobycie Śnieżki było dużo prostsze, bo wyruszyłem i skończyłem trasę w Czeskim miasteczku niezwykłej urody, czyli w Pec pod Sněžkou. Oba wyjścia odbywały się w zimie, więc na własnej skórze przekonałem się, że mówienie o Śnieżce jako o górze, na której panują wyjątkowo ciężkie warunki atmosferyczne jest w 100 procentach uzasadnione. Za pierwszym razem, bezpośrednio po wyjściu i zrobienia 2 zdjęć na szczycie, rozpocząłem szybkie schodzenie bo wiatr i przeszywający mróz był nie do zniesienia. Za drugim razem idąc od Czeskiej strony najpierw minęliśmy położoną niedaleko od szczytu Śnieżki górną stację kolejki górskiej, a później jakiś dziwny budynek będący schroniskiem górskim zbudowanym z zwykłego kontenera. Z wysokością Śnieżki wiąże się pewna ciekawostka, a mianowicie w XVI wieku Krzysztof Schilling, ówczesny rektor szkoły w Jeleniej Górze z wykorzystaniem całej swojej ówczesnej wiedzy i wszystkich dostępnych mu przyrządów pomiarowych zmierzył wysokość szczytu Śnieżki na 5500 metrów nad poziomem Kotliny Jeleniogórskiej czyli około 6000 metrów nad poziomem morza. Zatem wieść rozeszła się w świat, że Śnieżka zgodnie z XVI wieczną wiedzą jest najwyższą górą w Europie. Jakież ogromne musiało być zdziwienie Mieszkańców Alp którzy przywędrowali w Sudety, aby zobaczyć tego kolosa…
Kolejną ciekawostką ze Śnieżki są liczne obiekty znajdujące się na jej szczycie. Poza górną stacją kolejki linowej oraz dziwnym kontenerze można tam znaleźć jeszcze kaplica św. Wawrzyńca z roku 1665 i najbardziej charakterystyczny i chyba jeden z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych budynków w Polsce czyli Obserwatorium Wysokogórskie Instytutu Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej.
