Dealing with the sedentary challenges while doing a 9-5 job. - Ladies of Hive Contest #220.
Doing a 9-5 traditional job means I have to wake up very early and as I don't have my personal means of transportation so I usually take the bus. Altogether, I have to be seated for almost 10 hours.
Sounds crazy, right?
I work at a supermarket as a store manager. I usually don't manage any customers but sit behind the store. There I can have my own time like taking a coffee break in between, doing some online work like Hiving as well, etc.
That's not something that creates too much pressure. But sitting in the same place, without much public interaction, and being in a small space sometimes do impact on my health and mind.
.
To deal with this, I usually follow a routine. But as I work closely with my team, at the store so it's not possible to maintain this. And to be honest I'm facing many health issues, like vision problems, leg aches, and back aches. Fortunately, they are not chronic and I do not often have to take medicine.
I take a morning tea alone and start my work slowly, without any rush. This is my own personal time. Then check the inventory, talk with my colleagues, and plan for our day.
If there's a rush I have to walk a lot but it helps to move my muscles and works like an exercise. But if not then, I usually walk around the store for a few minutes in every two hours. Moreover, I do some movements while sitting like putting my hands up, and bending on the sides.
.
Also, for a tea break before lunch, I go outside for a short walk like for 5 minutes to take the tea from a nearby roadside stall.
During the afternoon, the store gets rush-free so that time I do some vision/eye exercise. Like closing my eyes for a few minutes, looking far for a minute, etc.
What I like most is the walk when I come back home after work. I take the footpath to walk for around 30 minutes to avoid the traffic. When I pass the signal area and then take the bus, it takes less time this way. Also, the walk feels good after the long hours.
.
Being in front of the screen for around 5-6 hours every day and being seated for around 10 hours is not a joke. It sometimes takes a toll on my health.
I sometimes think about doing early morning yoga or light exercises. But because of my schedule, house chores, and sending my children to school; mornings are very busy. And it gets almost 7 every day when I come back home. So I don't feel the energy to do the exercises after work.
I indeed need to focus more on my health. Thanks for the question, it's helping me to rethink about my challenges and make better plans to deal with them.

Sadly, I don't do any real exercise but some free-hand movements. I will try to do more. Thanks.

10 hours is a whole lot but I can see you got the right exercises to keep you healthy especially the footwalk where you can before taking a bus.
For how long have you been working in that place?

It's a lot, I know. I have been in this place for over 2 years now. The work environment is good that's why I don't think of switching. Keeping myself up.
